2003 Volvo C70 Convertible reviews and buying guide.

2003 Volvo C70 Convertible resources:

2003 Volvo C70 Convertible

The 2003 Volvo C70 convertible has aggressive lines indicative of power, grace and aesthetics. the fully automatic, insulated cloth top folds seamlessly away at the touch of a button to take you from a quiet, refined driving experience to an exuberant top-down cruise in a new type of Volvo: one designed to allow the joy of pure driving pleasure.

The C70 blazed the trail for Volvo design, transforming with an inspired vision of automotive athleticism lead by the C70 Coupe and Convertible in 2002 and continued this year with only the Convertible. It remains in the Volvo product lineup and offers stiff competition within the competitive and growing premium drop-top segment. 2003 sees a boost in horsepower for both the light-pressure turbo and high-pressure turbo models.

Under the Hood

Two turbo engines distinguish the 2003 Volvo C70. Unlike most engines, the more powerful one, a high pressure turbo, actually has less displacement than its partner. The 2.4-liter 5-cylinder light-pressure turbo jumps from 190 horsepower to 197 and it sports 210lb-ft of torque. The 2.3-liter high-pressure-turbo model increases the boost to 242 horsepower, up from 236 from last year’s. It has 243lb-ft of torque at the low 2400rpm level.

A 5-speed automatic transmission is available on both engines but the high-pressure version comes standard with a 5-speed manual for an enhanced and intuitive driving experience. The automatic is available optionally for the high-pressure turbo models as well. For the class and the speed, mileage ratings are a quite respectable 20/28mpg (city/hwy). This is not surprising as fuel efficiency has always been a Volvo concern.

Beyond that, Volvo designs for safety. Highlights are the three-point seatbelts, head restraints at all seating positions, a side impact protection system (SIPS) with enhanced side impact airbags, and WHIPS system seats, which protect against whiplash. The C70 also provides the unique ROPS system. This integrated safety system providespretensioning seatbelts and automatically deployable rollover bars in the event of a rollover accident.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

Air conditioning with dual-zone automatic climate controls, cruise control, leather upholstery on heated 8-way power front bucket seats, driver-seat memory settings, heated power mirrors and an AM/FM/cassette/CD player are all standard equipment on the base level 2.4-liter. An upgrade to the 2.3-liter adds wood trim and some other details, including a 3CD in-dash player.

Options groups include a touring package with a trip computer, automatic day/night rearview and a wood trim normally only found at the up-level 2.3 level.
