2003 Volvo S40
The 2003 Volvo S40 Sedan is a true Volvo with a full
complement of safety features, interior amenities and
a sophisticated chassis design. Owners of this year's
model will enjoy a host of stylistic and performance
enhancements supported by significant additions to the
optional and Premium and Sport Packages. 10 more hp
boost the engine output to 170 from last years 160.
A four-door sedan, the base S40 is nevertheless equipped
with the usual allotment of Volvo technical virtues
at an affordable price.
If you want a car sturdy enough to keep your family
safe, reliable enough to count on for years, powerful
enough to get you past a tanker truck at highway speeds
and lastly, prestigious enough to be proud to have in
your driveway, you need look no further than the Volvo
line, of which the S40 is just a component.
Under the Hood
The S40 has a potent 1.9-liter 4-cyl capable of 170hp
at 5250rpm and 177lb-ft of torque between 1800 and 4800
rpm. 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission
makes for smooth acceleration and an untroubled ride.
Electronic Brake Distribution (EDB) provides superb
antilock braking power while 4-wheel independent suspension
enhances control and road manners.
Meanwhile, improving the performance of the car in
inclement weather conditions, the optional Dynamic Stability
Assistance feature monitors and compares the rotational
speed of all four wheels and uses the engine to reduce
torque when traction loss is indicated. This is part
of the Climate Package.
One of the big selling points for Volvo is its identity
as a leader in auto safety. This Sedan is no exception.
Side Impact Protection System (SIPS), the Inflatable
Curtain (IC) Whiplash Protection Seating System (Whips)
and smart dual front airbags (SRS) all combine to make
a comprehensively protective airbag safety package.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The two packages provide a couple of different sets
of classy luxuries. For example, the Premium Package
offers a leather covered gear shift and hand-brake handle,
while the optional Sport package includes 17-inch Galactica
alloy wheels, a new rear trunk-mounted spoiler.
These options all add on to the AM/FM/CD player, three-spoke
steering wheel and sporty four dial instrument cluster
that comes as standard equipment, among many other interior
amenities. Meanwhile, an aggressive egg-crate style
grill, new body-color side-moldings and bumpers adorn
the exterior.
The final result is the stylish and versatile Volvo
S-40 Sedan.
