2003 Volvo S60 reviews and buying guide.

2003 Volvo S60

The Volvo P2 platform, upon which the S80 and the all-new XC90 SUV are based, has bred a new Sedan, the 2003 Volvo S60 Sedan. This performance oriented sport sedan continues to offer a wide range of engine and option-package choices while steadfastly holding true to Volvo's core values of safety, performance and value.

In 2003, four iterations of the S60 sedan are offered: the S60 2.4, S60 2.4T, S60 2.5T AWD and the sporty S60 T5. Each of these has a different engine from the other but each has Volvo’s distinctive focus on efficiency over brute force. Different sized 5-cyl engines make the key differences between these models.

Under the Hood

The 5-cylinder engines come in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions and can be teamed with either the 5-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmissions. Exceptionaltorsional rigidity and a tuned suspension deliver a dramatic blend of ride quality and handling.

The 2.4 comes with 168 hp at 5900 rpm and 170 lb-ft of torque at 4500rpm. The turbo 2.4T boosts these figures to 197 hp and 210lb-ft of torque. The slightly larger, 2.5-liter turbo brings that number to 208 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque for the all-wheel drive version of the S60, the 2.5T AWD. Finally, a high-pressure turbo turns the 2.3-liter engine in the top level T5 into a rocket with 247hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. All these engines display a respectable and environmentally positive 21 to 28mpg, not bad for this segment of cars with such speed and power.

Other technological innovations include a state-of-the-art braking system with Emergency Brake Assist (EBA). The traction control is consistent with Volvo's unwavering commitment to occupant safety. As are a Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) with side impact airbags and Inflatable Curtain (IC), Whiplash Protection Seating System (WHIPS), seat belts with pyrotechnicpretensioners in all seating positions, dual-stage front airbags and Volvo's safety cage construction.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The Volvo interior is designed with an ergonomic focus that will optimize the driving experience. Clear, intuitive instruments that reside within the natural arc of the hand surround Volvo’s legendary comfortable seats. Driver-centric creature comforts include a spacious interior with comfortable seating for five. The top-level models of the S60 come with heated seats and rain-sensing wipers.

In addition, Volvo's patentedPremAir includes ozone reduction radiator coating, and a wealth of industry-leading environmental control technologies. The Volvo S60 is sporty sedan that doesn’t cost the Earth.
