2003 Volvo S80
At the top of the Volvo Sedan line and based on the venerable
P2 platform, the elegant and sophisticated S80 has claimed
a significant share of the luxury sedan market sin its
introduction in 1998.
Volvo’s tradition of superior safety design, sophistication
with practicality and luxury with environmental responsibility
is echoed in the S80, which sports a great deal of power
and it all comes from a V6. Unmatched in this class
where V8s, and in some cases V12s, are the norm. This
is commendable for Volvo but does the power hungry North
American full-size sedan buyer want to suffer? The answer
is “Of course not!”
Fortunately, owners of the S80 won’t notice the smaller engines
until they check there bank statements for gas receipts.
This is an efficient, technologically sophisticated
and safety oriented vehicle that has the ability to
outperform a large portion of its competition.
Under the Hood
The S80 sedans are powered by a choice of naturally aspirated
or twin-turbo in-line 6-cylinder engines: they deliver
a spirited performance that is enhanced by various sophisticated
stability and traction control systems. Thedohc V6 in
the 2.9 has 194 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. Stepping
up to the T6 pumps those numbers up significantly, to
268hp and 280lb-ft of torque.
Meanwhile, Stability Traction Control (STC) and Dynamic Stability
Traction Control (DSTC) will help assure that you keep
it on the road. An electronically controlled "adaptive"
four-speed automatic transmission with the "Geartronic"
variant available for the twin-turbo model is also standard.
Other innovations include less obvious refinements like
full multiplex electronics, which eliminates pounds
of wiring while increasing component reliability, integration
and performance.
An array of best-in-class safety innovations further distinguishes
the 2003 S80.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
For 2003 the Volvo S80 sees a number of subtle enhancements
and option-package changes but it still delivers a terrific
selection of interior amenities on all models.
On Call Plus, Volvo's firsttelematics system for emergency
services and roadside assistance, is standard on the
T6 and T6 Elite and optional on the 2.9. Rain sensor
wipers adjust wiper speed depending on the amount of
moisture detected on the windshield and are part of
a new Climate Package.
Finally, at the apex of Volvo luxury, the S80 T6 Elite offers
a premium trim level that is the ultimate expression
of Volvo comfort and technology.
