2003 Volvo V70
The 2003 Volvo V70 wagon is one of Volvo's largest
vehicles. Volvo has combined unparalleled flexibility,
longevity, comfort and handling in a package that still
has the characteristic Volvo attention to quality, advanced
safety design and durability.
The V70 has four versions for 2003 to be described
here, the 2.4, 2.4T, 2.5T AWD, and the sporty T5. These
all have different engines but they share the same innovative
performance and handling technology.
Under the Hood
This year sees a wide array of performance and luxury
enhancements including, on the all-wheel-drive models,
a new, more powerful 2.5-liter turbocharged engine,
found on the logically titled 2.5T. This engine produces
208 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and a stout 236 lb.-ft.
of torque from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm. Alternatively, drivers
can take the basic 2.4, a naturally aspirated 5-cyl
with 168 hp at 5900rpm and 170 lb-ft of torque at 4500
rpm. The 5-speed Geartronic transmission is a standard
team-up that allows either fully automatic or driver
selectable gear changes and allows an impressive 22/30
mpg (city/hwy).
Further performance and handling enhancements include
ABS braking, 4-wheel independent suspension and Dynamic
Stability Traction Control, a feature previously unavailable
on the 2.4 and now a stand-alone option for 2003.
The safety story is also very impressive. Touted as
the "safest wagon ever built by Volvo", the
V70 benefits from a comprehensive array of safety features
including standard dual-stage front airbags (SRS), Side
Impact Protection System (SIPS) with side airbags and
Inflatable Curtain (IC), seat belts with pyrotechnic
pretensioners in all seating positions, Whiplash Protection
Seating System (WHIPS), Volvo's safety cage construction
and the ISO-FIX attachment for rearward-facing child
safety seats.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Air conditioning with dual-zone manual climate controls,
cruise control, available leather upholstery on heated
(2.5T and T5 models) 8-way power (2.4T on up) front
bucket seats, driver-seat memory settings, heated power
mirrors and an AM/FM/cassette/CD player are highlights
of the extensive collections of standard and optional
equipment available for the V90 line. Volvo has more
optional extras than some cars have standard features
and this is on top of a generous collection of installed
equipment.
The result is a plush and well-appointed car that fits
quite easily into the near-luxury car class. Count on
being well taken care of and/or being able to choose
to add a myriad of optional extras for your new Volvo
vehicle.
