2003 Volvo XC70 Cross Country
The 2003 Volvo XC70 Cross Country embodies all that
has made Volvo the world-wide leader in premium wagons
and more; combining unparalleled flexibility, comfort,
handling, quality, advanced safety design and durability.
With burly good looks and all-weather capability, the
XC70 was designed to appeal to the rugged individual
seeking the ultimate active-lifestyle vehicle.
This year's XC70 enjoys a new, more powerful 2.5-liter
turbocharged engine that it shares with the all-new
XC90 sport-utility vehicle and materials of the highest
quality are evident throughout. Well-equipped option
packages abound and passenger choice is addressed in
many different ways for added versatility. Important
to many consumers, the XC70 uses technology to purify
the environment inside the car while paying world-leading
attention to the task of reducing the impact of their
vehicles on the environment outside.
Under the Hood
The XC70's 2.5-liter turbocharged engine produces 208
horsepower at 5,000 rpm and a stout 236 lb.-ft. of torque
from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm. The 5-speed Geartronic transmission
allows either fully automatic or driver selectable gear
changes. Fuel economy is as impressive as that found
on other Volvo vehicles, despite its size and power,
with rates of 20/27 mpg (city/hwy).
The advanced electronically controlled Haldex all-wheel-drive
system, which routes power to the wheels with greater
traction and reacts almost instantaneously to wheel
slip, replaces last year's viscous coupled all-wheel-drive
unit. ABS braking, 4-wheel independent suspension and
responsive rack and pinion steering are all standard.
A very impressive and comprehensive array of safety
features includes standard dual-stage front airbags
(SRS), Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) with side
airbags and Inflatable Curtain (IC), seat belts with
pyrotechnic pretensioners in all seating positions,
Whiplash Protection Seating System (WHIPS), Volvo's
safety cage construction and the ISO-FIX attachment
for rearward-facing child safety seats.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Volvo XC70 gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel
and single disc in-dash CD audio system as standard
equipment as well as a generous collection of other
features, including extensive packages. For example,
the Climate Package is standard on the XC70 this year.
It includes such advantages as Rainsensor windshield
wipers, heated seats and headlight washer/wipers.
Meanwhile, cargo carrying capacity is extensive. With
the rear split-folding bench and front passenger seats
folded down, the XC70 has 71.4 cubic feet of carpeted
cargo area! What's more the Versatility Package adds
two rear-facing seats, increasing passenger-carrying
capacity to seven.
