2004 Acura MDX Review:
Acura models take the underskins of Hondas, complete with
the manufacturer’s renowned build quality, durability and
value, and lavishly spread on the comfort. This trait is perfectly
exemplified by the MDX, Acura’s luxury sport utility vehicle.
For 2004, the MDX is much improved. It has revised styling,
additional horsepower, more standard equipment and better
safety. They add to a package that was already brimming with
premium appointments and performance features like the MDX’s
standard all-wheel drive configuration.
One of the new items standard on all MDX models for 2004
is a tire-pressure monitor. Another is head-protecting curtain
side airbags. They are placed in all three rows and are designed
to deploy in both side impacts and rollovers.
Under the Hood
The MDX is offered in two trims, base and Touring, and they
both share the same engine. It is a 3.5-liter V6 that produces
265 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 253 lb-ft of torque at 4500
rpm.
All 2004 MDX models use 5-speed automatic transmission. This
gives them a fuel rating of 17/23 mpg (city/highway).
The MDX is given the Variable Torque Management 4-Wheel-Drive
(VTM-4) system. It reroutes torque to the wheels that need
in most, depending on the situation. Though it is designed
to be driven primarily on pavement, the MDX can still safely
be taken off-road in medium duty applications.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
There are quite a few new features with the 2004 MDX that
contribute to an even greater level of luxury than before.
New bumpers, a new acoustic windshield for a quieter cabin,
softer leather grain on the doors and seats and a brushed
finish on audio and shifter controls all up the refinement.
Climate control is taken to a whole new level with the MDX.
Its front and rear climate control system leads the class
in heating and cooling times. One button sets the temperature,
which the system will automatically hold even if the weather
outside changes. A "Rear A/C Manual" button lets
second-row passengers select the volume and temperature of
the air flowing to the rear seat.
There are a few options available this year, like a rear-seat
DVD entertainment system. There’s also an advanced navigation
system, which comes with a built-in rear camera that is activated
when the MDX is put into reverse. Now that’s luxury.
