2004 Acura RSX Review:
The RSX is the least expensive model on the Acura lot, but
you won’t be seeing anyone trying to pawn off one of theirs
because it’s cheap. After all, it is made by Acura, which
is a division of Honda. And most people know by now that Honda
cars last a long, long time.
As a sporty coupe, the RSX is given the type of performance
that can often lead to some pretty high speeds being generated.
To balance this, the makers at Acura equipped the RSX with
a tight handling package, as well as a solid frame that withstands
the force of impacts.
They also gave the RSX a dual-stage airbag system that includes
front and side airbags. Sensors in the front passenger's seat
determine the occupant's height and seating position. If the
occupant is of small stature and leaning into the side airbag
deployment path, this sensor will prevent the side
airbag from deploying.
Under the Hood
Base models use a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine. It
generates 160 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 141 lb-ft of torque
at 4000 rpm. Customers looking at the entry-level RSX will
have a choice between 5-speed manual and 5-speed automatic
transmissions. The automatic setup features the added fun
of a manual-shift model for when your hands get too restless
at the wheel.
The RSX Type-S is the model to pick up if you want increased
power and performance. Under its hood is a 2.0-liter I4 that
punches out 200 horsepower at 7400 rpm and 142 lb-ft of torque
at 6000 rpm. It uses a 6-speed manual transmission with a
short throw shifter and a short clutch-pedal stroke for effortless
gear changes.
Both RSX models feature a suspension system that has been
upgraded for 2004. The front strut and double-wishbone rear
system has been optimized on the Type-S with firmer springs
and dampers, giving it even greater responsiveness and road
feel.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Acura equips the RSX with a generous 17.8-cubic foot rear
cargo area. It also has a 50/50 rear seat that swells the
total to 25.3 cubic feet.
A 6-speaker audio system with an in-dash CD player is standard.
Type-S models upgrade that to a Bose system with a six-disc
changer.
Type-S models also have leather upholstery, which is optional
with base RSX models.
