Used 2004 Audi A4 Avant
Buying Guide:
For 2004, the Audi A4 lineup is given a real shot in the
arm with the introduction of an all-new S4 model. This high-performance
A4 variant is offered in sedan and Avant forms, and it serves
to add a measure of aggression and abandon to the best-selling
car in the Audi corral (sedan and Cabriolet covered separately).
Audi Avant models are the wagons in the group. They come
with standard all-wheel drive, plenty of cargo volume and
a safety package that covers each and every passenger.
The new S4 speedster promises to turn the Avant into a wagon
the likes of which rarely comes around. It is supremely powerful,
decidedly well-mannered and exceptionally stylish. In other
words, it is at the top of the line for a reason. It’s also
limited—Audi says only 5000 models will be sold annually.
Under the Hood
There are three engines reserved for the 2004 Audi Avant.
Entry-level 1.8T models receive a 1.8-liter turbocharged inline
4-cylinder engine. It delivers 170 horsepower and 166 lb-ft
of torque.
3.0 models are so named because they have a 3.0-liter V6
engine residing under their sleek hood. It is able to produce
220 horsepower and 221lb-ft of torque.
The quattro all-wheel drive system is an integral part of
all Audi A4 Avant wagons. It uses all four wheels to maintain
a sure and steady footing.
The new S4 has standard sport suspension and a 4.2-liter
V8 engine that cranks out a whopping 340 horsepower and 302
lb-ft of torque. 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission
with a manual-shift mode are both available with the new S4.
There’s also an optional Sport Package. It adds a firmer
suspension with performance tires on 17-inch wheels.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Like the sedan, the Avant wagon seats five. However, its
larger body accounts for over 47 more cubic feet of cargo
volume.
All models are pretty well equipped. They have air conditioning
with dual-zone automatic climate controls, cruise control,
heated washer nozzles and remote keyless entry. Of course,
that is just the opening few lines of the complete standard
feature list.
A tire-pressure monitor is also standard this year. A navigation
system is optional for 3.0 and S4 models. Available on all
A4s is OnStar assistance and, for 2004, satellite radio.
