2004 Audi A4 Sedan Review:
For 2004, the incredibly popular A4 is given such an infusion
of power, style and substance that Audi’s competition must
surely be shaking in their boots. Already the best-selling
line from the German manufacturer, the A4 is now poised to
grab an even larger hold on the market share.
2004 sees the refined A4 receive a newly standard tire-pressure
monitor, and there is more optional equipment offered as well.
In addition, Audi’s revolutionary quattro all-wheel drive
system is more widely available.
But the big news is an all-new S4 high-performance model.
It has well over 300 horsepower, plenty of standard features
and a unique trim. It’s also limited—Audi says only 5000 models
will be sold annually.
Under the Hood
Three engines power this year’s crop of A4 sedans. The first
is offered with base 1.8T models. It is a 1.8-liter turbocharged
inline 4-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and
166 lb-ft of torque.
3.0 models have a 3.0-liter V6 engine that generates 220
horsepower and 221lb-ft of torque. Like the 1.8T, the 3.0
can be fitted with quattro all-wheel drive.
A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is standard
on front-wheel-drive 3.0 sedans and is available on the front-drive
1.8T sedan, which comes standard with 5-speed manual. The
CVT provides variable drive ratios, plus six preset "gears"
selected from a shift gate or steering-wheel buttons.
The new S4 has standard all-wheel drive, sport suspension
and a 4.2-liter V8 engine. It delivers a ridiculous 340 horsepower
and 302 lb-ft of torque. 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic
transmission with a manual-shift mode are both available with
the new S4.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Joining the sedan in the A4 family are a wagon and a convertible
(covered separately). In terms of interior space, the sedan
is right in the middle.
All models have air conditioning with dual-zone automatic
climate controls, cruise control, heated washer nozzles and
remote keyless entry. 1.8T and 3.0 models with quattro all-wheel
drive add an AM/FM/cassette player with an in-dash 6-disc
CD changer, a trip computer and an outside-temperature indicator.
In addition to its excessive power, the S4 also has leather
upholstery, which is optional with 3.0 models.
A navigation system is optional for 3.0 and S4 models. Available
on all A4s is OnStar assistance and, for 2004, satellite radio.
