2004 Buick Park Avenue Review:
What Buick calls the perfect expression of sensible luxury,
the 2004 Park Avenue is all class—just as it has always been.
Long, lean and mean when it needs to be, the Park Avenue has
a surprising amount of power under its hood. While not necessarily
out of place with its refined design, it does raise the eyebrows
somewhat.
Of course, owners won’t mind the added power, especially
when driving the Park Avenue Ultra, a model that is given
its title for a reason. It exemplifies the Park Avenue name,
all the while paying homage to the past with classic Buick
features such as a vertical-bar grille and front fender portholes.
Originally introduced in 1949 as "VentiPorts," these
chrome-plated portholes on each front fender give the vehicle
a powerful look and allow additional air to flow through the
engine compartment.
Under the Hood
The base Park Avenue model is equipped with a 3.8-liter Series
II V6 engine with 205 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 230 lb-ft
of torque at 4000 rpm. It is mated to a 4-speed automatic
transmission.
Park Avenue Ultra benefits from a supercharged 3.8-liter
Series II V6 engine. It generates the maximum 240 horsepower
at 5200 rpm and 280 lb-ft of torque at 3600 rpm. A standard
Gran Touring package with specially tuned suspension and rear
stabilizer bar keep the Ultra’s ride ultra smooth.
Safety is addressed with standard 4-wheel antilock disc brakes,
dual front airbags and front side airbags.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Park Avenue’s long, 113.8-inch wheelbase means roominess
for everyone, plus added space in the trunk for golf clubs
and suitcases. Up to six passengers can sit comfortably inside.
While the base model is certainly nice, the Ultra goes one
step further. A Burled Walnut woodgrain trim on the instrument
panel, steering wheel, doors and optional convenience console
matches well with soft leather upholstery. Ultra also has
an electrochromic inside rearview mirror with integral compass,
heated outside rearview mirrors with integral turn indicators
and a Concert Sound III audio system.
The Ultra offers such options as a sunroof, a trunk-mounted
CD changer, a head-up instrumentation display and Ultrasonic
Rear Parking Assist.
