2004 Buick Rainier Review:
The Rainier is a brand-new midsize sport utility vehicle
offered up by Buick. The GM division promotes this newborn
by saying it offers a level of style, ride, comfort and performance
not found in other vehicles in the segment. Strong words to
assert, and only time will tell if their characterization
is correct.
From the initial looks of things however, it appears as though
this description does have merit. The Rainier is a sturdy
truck-based SUV that offers two strong engines and has plenty
of comfort features and a series of enticing stand-alone options.
The 2004 Rainier is not only solidly constructed to withstand
years of diverse driving elements, it is also made to do it
as quietly as possible. All Rainier models feature Buick’s
QuietTuning with increased sound absorption in the engine
compartment, all four doors and quarter panels.
Under the Hood
The standard powertrain with CXL and CXL Plus models is a
4.2-liter inline 6-cylinder engine. It generates an impressive
275 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 275 lb-ft of torque at 3600
rpm. 4-speed automatic is the transmission mated to this engine.
Customers seeking more power need look no further than the
optional engine offered for the Rainier’s debut year. It is
a 5.3-liter V8 with 290 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 325 lb-ft
of torque at 4000 rpm. Both engines are available with either
two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
The Rainier has an independent front suspension and a five-link,
electronically controlled rear air suspension. With the latter,
air springs replace the standard rear coil springs for superior
damping and improved isolation from road noise. In addition,
sensors manage a compressor that instantly adjusts air spring
pressure to maintain a level load.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The four-door Buick Rainier is among the segment's roomiest
in terms of head, shoulder and hip room. It seats five and
with the rear seats folded down, there is 80.1 cubic feet
of storage space behind the first-row seats.
The standard package on all models is quite nice. Air conditioning
with dual-zone automatic climate controls, the OnStar telematics
system and leather upholstery start things off.
Some of the available options include a rear-seat DVD entertainment
system, a navigation system, heated front seats, a power sunroof
and power-adjustable pedals.
