2004 Chevrolet Avalanche Review:
The model that put crossover vehicles on the map, the Chevrolet
Avalanche has gained a wider appeal with each successive year
since its introduction. For 2004, Chevrolet hopes to maintain
this trend as it continues to offer the Avalanche in ½-ton
1500 models and larger ¾-ton 2500 models.
For those of you who may have been living under a rock for
the last few years, here’s a quick reminder of what the Avalanche
is. It is a SUV/pickup truck crossover with a midgate separating
the cabin from the cargo bed. If you lower the midgate and
rear seat, the bed extends from 5.3 to 8.1-ft.
For 2004, Hydroboost brakes are now standard on all 1500
models. The system provides sufficient power assist to stop
the vehicle if the engine stalls or is turned off. It also
uses power steering fluid pressure to decrease brake pedal
effort
Under the Hood
1500 models are fitted with a 5.3-liter V8 engine that delivers
plenty of muscle for all the Avalanche’s applications. It
can generate 295 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque
at 4000 rpm.
Larger 2500s have an 8.1-liter Vortec V8 engine with 320
horsepower at 4200 rpm and 445 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm.
They also have heavy-duty suspension for even more rugged
ability. Both 1500s and 2500s come in two-wheel drive configurations
or all-wheel drive configurations.
In addition to its quick-stopping brakes, the 2004 Avalanche
has other comprehensive security features. These include "all-belts-to-seats"
restraints at the front outboard positions, side airbags and
a front-seat passenger-sensing system with dual-level airbags.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
With the midgate and rear seat up, the Avalanche can seat
a maximum of six (with a front bench seat). Fold them down
and you lose three places, but gain even more cargo bed space.
The choice is yours; and that is why the Chevrolet Avalanche
is so popular among owners.
In addition to being a tough, versatile model, the Avalanche
is also quite smart. It uses a communication network that
transfers data throughout the entire vehicle. It enables the
driver information center, which can be programmed for English,
Spanish or French, to monitor and report as many as 34 vehicle
system functions.
Options for 2004 include the OnStar system, XM satellite
radio and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.
