2004 Chevrolet Colorado LS Review:
The all-new Chevrolet Colorado is one of the biggest compact
pickup trucks you'll find. It straddles the line of the midsize
segment, just barely coming in under the bar. Chevrolet designed
the Colorado to fit the needs of compact buyers, who tend
to be younger and more diverse.
Thus, they gave the Colorado style, driving ease, cargo-carrying
ability and diversity. But in the end, the Colorado remains
a rugged pickup, easily capable of handling difficult workdays
in tough weather situations.
LS models are the top of the line for 2004. The new Colorado
is offered in regular cab, extended cab and crew cab forms.
The extended cab has dual rear-hinged back doors and seats
up to five. The four-door crew cab seats up to six and has
a 5-ft-long cargo box, while other models have a 6-ft bed

Two new inline engines make their debut along with the 2004
Colorado. They are both derived from the Vortec 4200 inline
6-cylinder model found in the TrailBlazer. Standard on most
Colorado models is a 2.8-liter I4. It delivers 175 horsepower
at 5600 rpm and 185 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm.
Crew cab LS models with a ZQ8 package feature a 3.5-liter
I5, which produces 220 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 225 lb-ft
of torque at 2800 rpm. It is available on other models as
well.
Rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations are
both available. With a ladder-type frame, the Colorado's chassis
offers superb torsional stiffness and durability. Rear-drive
models use an independent front suspension and a live rear
axle and four-wheel-drive models have a torsion-bar suspension
setup.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
2004 Colorados are offered with a number of different performance
packages. A Z71 off-road suspension package lifts the pickup
off the ground for rugged applications, while a ZQ8 sport-suspension
gives 2WD Colorados big 17-inch wheels, among other things.
LS models have more standard equipment than base models (covered
separately), and they also offer more options. An appearance
group decks out the LS with a leather-wrapped steering wheel,
color-keyed bumpers and grille, color-keyed wheel flares (4WD)
and fog lights.
Some of the other options that are available for the Colorado's
first year are curtain side airbags, the OnStar telematics
system, an AM/FM radio with an in-dash 6-disc CD changer and
satellite radio.
