2004 Chevrolet Express Extended Length Review:
When it comes to vans, you don’t get much bigger than the
Chevrolet Express extended length model. It is a full-sizer
any way you put it. Twenty inches longer than the already-gargantuan
regular length Express (covered in a separate review), the
extended length model is offered for those who really need
to move a lot of people.
The extended length Express comes in a ¾-ton 2500 model and
a 1-ton 3500 model. It also does duty as a cargo model for
commercial endeavors, which gives you some idea of its performance
ability.
Assisting the Express is an advanced multiplexed communication
network that transfers data throughout the vehicle to allow
the instrument cluster to monitor and report on more than
20 system functions. The system also supports features such
as dual-level airbags, lockout prevention, retained accessory
power and battery-rundown protection.
Under the Hood
G2500 models are equipped with a 4.8-liter Vortec V8 engine.
It can produce up to 275 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 290 lb-ft
of torque at 4000 rpm. Larger G3500s have a 6.0-liter Vortec
V8 engine with 300 horsepower at 4400 rpm and 360 lb-ft of
torque at 4000 rpm (optional with the G2500).
Both rear-wheel drive models feature 4-speed automatic overdrive
transmission. With the 3500, it is of the heavy-duty variety.
For 2004, extended length Express models will be equipped
with the StabiliTrak vehicle stability enhancement system
as an interim change during the 2004 model-year production
cycle. StabiliTrak helps drivers maintain control of vehicles
during certain difficult driving conditions such as ice, snow,
gravel, wet pavement and uneven road surfaces, as well as
in emergency lane changes or avoidance maneuvers.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
These models can seat up to fifteen people—or an entire baseball
team. 316.8 cubic feet of interior cargo volume is also at
your disposal. Do with it whatever you want—that’s what the
Express is there for.
Safety is a top priority with the 2004 Chevrolet Express.
Standard safety enhancements include driver and front-passenger
belts, dual front airbags, three-point lap and shoulder belts
in all first and second-row seating positions, and the LATCH
(Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system for child
seats
Options for 2004 include the handy OnStar system, a swing-out
driver-side door and an AM/FM/CD player.
