For 2004, the Impala is available in a new supercharged SS
model. First offered in 1961, the Impala Super Sport has a
tradition of high-powered performance and breathtaking style.
The 2004 Impala SS is just one of the cars rolling out of
the GM Performance Division. The goal is to produce new models
that feature exhilarating acceleration, enhanced handling
and superior driveability. Also debuting in the 2004 model
year is the Supercharged Monte Carlo SS.
Under the Hood
There are three engines—one for each model trim—with the
2004 Impala. Base models receive a 3.4-liter V6 that delivers
180 horsepower and 205 lb-ft of torque. Uplevel LS models
features a 3.8-liter Series II V6 with 200 horsepower and
225 lb-ft of torque (optional with the base model).
The new Impala SS is fitted with a 3.8-liter supercharged
Series II V6, giving it an impressive 240 horsepower and 280
lb-ft of torque. All three engines are mated to a 4-speed
automatic transmission.
While all Impala models have a stiff frame and four-wheel
independent suspension for smooth driving, the SS goes a few
steps further. Chassis and suspension enhancements give the
Impala SS a sportier ride and better handling capabilities.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Not satisfied with a different engine and suspension components,
the new Impala SS also looks to distinguish itself with its
style. It has a Corvette-inspired body-color rear taillamp
appliqué, a unique spoiler and dual bright stainless-steel
exhaust tips. On the inside, the 2004 SS debuts a racing-inspired
six-gauge cluster with boost gauge, graphite trim appliqués
"SS" badging and "SS" logos on the door

For the rest of the lineup, there are a few improvements
as well. The Impala's seats get a styling upgrade for 2004,
with new sport cloth for the 60/40 split-bench front seat
and the 40/40 front buckets with console. In addition, sport
leather also is available for the 40/40 bucket seats with
console.
A sport appearance package is a new option for the base model.
It joins a laundry list of equipment group options and stand-alone
items.
