2004 Chevrolet Tahoe Review:
Having already established itself as the best-selling full-size
sport utility vehicle in the US, one would think the makers
at Chevy would be happy with the Tahoe’s package. But they’re
not: for 2004, the Tahoe is given a number of new safety features
to handle the road.
The new features include a tire-pressure monitor, a right
front passenger safety belt reminder and Hydroboost brakes.
Hydroboost brakes provide added safety with more reserve power
assist for braking under specific conditions. The system uses
power-steering fluid pressure to decrease brake pedal effort
for quick, responsive stops.
The Tahoe is available in two trim levels. A number of options
are also available, including a Z71 Off-Road Equipment Package.
Under the Hood
Not surprisingly, both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive
configurations are available. While 4WD models have the grip
one would expect, 2WD models are given electronic traction
assist to ensure surefootedness.
The engine powering the way for entry-level LS models is
a 4.8-liter Vortec V8. It produces 285 horsepower at 5600
rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. Uplevel LT models
have a 5.3-liter Vortec V8, capable of 295 horsepower at 5800
rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.
For 2004, the StabiliTrak system is available on models with
the 5.3-liter V8 engine. The system uses sensors to detect
loss of stability and makes adjustments to then right the
vehicle
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The calm ride of the Chevrolet Tahoe is partly due to the
truck chassis it employs. This sturdy underframe gives the
SUV exceptional rigidity, which in turn translates into smooth
sailing.
For 2004, two newly designed wheels are available: 16-inch
cast aluminum wheels on LS and LT, and 17-inch five-spoke
aluminum wheels with 16-inch steel blackwall spare, available
on LT models. New tire selections include 17-inch all-season
P265/70R17 blackwall tires and 17-inch all-season, P265/70R17white
outlined-letter tires.
Along with power and safety, there’s also plenty of comfort
and space with the Tahoe. It has 104.6 cubic feet of cargo
volume with the second row seats folded forward. An optional
third-row bench seat offers up to nine-passenger seating.
The third-row rear seat also features a unique 50/50 split-fold
design to provide a variety of cargo- and passenger-carrying
configurations.
