2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT Review:
The TrailBlazer EXT is like a regular length TrailBlazer
on steroids. It grows bigger, badder and more capable of justifying
its rugged name. With more seating and the option to add a
serious torque-producing engine, this is the SUV to select
if you want a mid-size model with bad intentions.
A choice between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, advanced
safety features, two model trims, strength and surefootedness—these
are the standards you can expect with all 2004 TrailBlazers.
The EXT is just bigger and meaner.
For 2004, the TrailBlazer EXT has a variety of new features.
It has new wheel choices, more options, new exterior colors
and new interior fabric changes. And like last year, the 2004
TrailBlazer EXT is also offered in a North Face Edition package,
a must for true outdoor enthusiasts.
Under the Hood
Like the regular length TrailBlazer (covered in a separate
review), the sole powertrain for both LS and LT TrailBlazer
EXT models is a 4.2-liter inline Vortec 6-cylinder engine.
Mated to a standard 4-speed automatic transmission, it can
produce 275 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 275 lb-ft of torque
at 3600 rpm.
However, with the EXT you can opt for a more powerful 5.3-liter
Vortec V8 engine. It has an aluminum block for thermal efficiency,
which in turns translates into better performance and fuel
efficiency. Also mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission,
it cranks out 290 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 325 lb-ft of
torque at 4000 rpm.
The 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT has hydraulically-assisted
power rack-and-pinion steering for a nice set of road manners.
An Autotrac four-wheel-drive system is standard on 4x4 models.
Traction control is available as an option for two-wheel-drive
models.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The TrailBlazer EXT has four doors, but adds an extra row
of seating that results in seven-person capacity. It also
provides 100.2 cubic feet of cargo volume.
The North Face Edition package is an outdoorsman’s dream.
It includes standard unique 17-inch sport aluminum wheels,
lower accent-color body cladding, body-colored outside rearview
mirrors, running lamps, headlamp washers and B-pillar badging.
On the inside, The North Face Edition has badged seats, mesh
map pockets, rain-sense wipers, liftgate lighting, an underfloor
storage cargo liner, heavy-duty floor/cargo mats, an adjustable
cargo shelf with a table and The North Face duffel bags and
blanket.
