2004 Dodge Caravan Review:
After 20 years of making minivans, it’s safe to say that
Dodge knows what they’re doing. They’ve been at it longer
than most, and have also done it better than most. With over
10 million sales since the debut launch of the Caravan, the
numbers certainly don’t lie. Oh yeah, the Caravan is also
the best-selling minivan the world over.
Dodge celebrates two decades of achievement with a highly
refined Anniversary Edition model. The rest of the lineup
consists of Caravan and Grand Caravan models. Standard-wheelbase
minivan models include Dodge Caravan SE and Dodge Caravan
SXT. Extended-wheelbase models include Dodge Grand Caravan
SE, Dodge Grand Caravan SXT and Dodge Grand Caravan SXT All-Wheel
Drive.
New for 2004 are a tire-pressure monitor, remote keyless
entry and two new audio systems. Also available is a center
console with an internal power outlet that can be placed between
the front or second-row seats, and an optional adjustable-height
rear parcel shelf has pop-up storage dividers.
Under the Hood
The front-wheel drive Dodge Caravan offers a number of different
powertrain configurations this year. Base Caravan SE models
use a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder with 150 horsepower and
167 lb-ft of torque.
Caravan SXT and Grand Caravan SE trims are fitted with a
3.3-liter V6 engine. It has 180 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of
torque. Upper level Grand Caravan trims have more strength
with their 3.8-liter V6 engine, which produces 215 horsepower
and 245 lb-ft of torque.
The available all-wheel drive configuration with extended-length
Grand Caravan SXT models is just one of many safety features
this year. Others include dual front airbags, antilock brakes,
an available alarm system and available front side airbags.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Both 2004 Caravan models are have four doors and can seat
seven. Grand eX and SXT models have power operation for both
sliding side doors; a power passenger-side sliding door is
optional on the regular-length SXT.
If you have been a fan of the Caravan/Grand Caravan minivan
for years, or if you just enjoy premium features, the Anniversary
Edition should be of some interest. Offered with Grand Caravan
SXT models, it includes chrome alloy wheels, a rear-seat DVD
entertainment system, a 6-disc CD changer, leather upholstery
and unique badging.
Other stand-alones items that can be had are a power sunroof,
the DVD system and power-adjustable pedals.
