2004 Dodge Ram SRT-10 Review:
With all the work engineers have to do to get the Ram 1500
up to snuff to compete in the full-size pickup truck segment,
it must be nice for them to just let the imagination go wild.
That’s exactly what happens with the Ram SRT-10, easily the
most ridiculous of all hot-rod truck models.
Imagine yourself sitting in an aggressively styled, outrageous
pickup truck, with the full knowledge that under the hood
there lurks an engine with 500 horsepower and 525 lb-ft of
torque. Then you think of the result of this power, namely
that the SRT-10 tops 150 mph and reaches 60 mph in just over
five seconds!
What more can you say about the SRT-10? It is easily one
of the fastest vehicles out there, let alone the fastest pickup
truck. Using the Dodge Viper’s engine, it will get you places
quicker than you thought physically possible. But please,
buy this model with good sense, and try to obey the posted
speed limit whenever possible.
Under the Hood
But that might be impossible. The full specs of the SRT-10’s
engine are as follows: an 8.5-liter/ 505-cubic-inch V10 with
500 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 525 lb-ft of torque at 4200
rpm. 6-speed manual transmission lets you feel the power at
your fingertips.
The V10 is modified from the Viper’s design, resting on unique
engine mounts to deliver 90 percent of its torque from 1500
to 5600 rpm. In addition, the all-new cast-aluminum cylinder
block has interference-fit cast-iron liners and cross-bolted
main caps.
Of course, there’s more. The Ram SRT-10 has a custom-tuned,
independent suspension, Bilstein mono-tube shock absorbers,
performance-tuned springs and unique aerodynamic design aids
that keep it planted at high speeds.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The SRT-10’s wheels are huge: it uses 22-inch custom “Viper-style”
models fitted with 305/40 R22 Pirelli Scorpion tires. Compared
to regular Rams, the SRT-10 is dropped an inch in the front
and 2.5 inches in the rear—which is as much for functionality
as it is appearance.
The outside features a prominent front hood with an integrated
air intake and billet grille. You don’t want something like
this to be too flashy, so the colors offered are black, red
and silver.
If you really want to go overboard—which is sometimes a good
thing—there’s no better option than the 2004 Dodge Ram SRT-10.
