2004 Dodge Stratus Coupe Review:
One can’t help but compare
the Dodge Stratus coupe to that kid brother who’s always trying
to emulate his older sibling. With the Stratus coupe, the
older brother is the Dodge Viper, and while it doesn’t reach
the levels of that remarkable roadster, it doesn’t do too
bad either. Of course, it certainly could have chosen a lesser
role model to follow, but the result wouldn’t have been as
impressive.
The two-door, five-passenger
coupe doesn’t receive the redesigned front-end styling that
the Stratus sedan does. Instead, the majority of its changes
were made for the 2003 model year.
Under the Hood
There are two models in the
2004 Stratus coupe lineup, and they each come with a different
engine. The base SXT has a 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder motor with
147 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 158 lb-ft of torque at 4000
rpm. Top-line R/T models spice things up with a 3.0-liter
V6 doling out 200 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 205 lb-ft of
torque at 4500 rpm. Both engines are mated to either 4-speed
automatic transmission or 5-speed manual. However, R/T models
with automatic transmission offer AutoStick manual shifting.
Dodge Stratus coupes have
always been known for their handling abilities, and the 2004
model keeps up the trend. Fully independent suspension with
front and rear stabilizer bars helps maintain steadiness over
rough roads. R/T models offer antilock 4-wheel disc brakes
as an add-on.
Standard Features, Options
Packages and Style
Like the Stratus sedan, the
Stratus coupe has plenty of room on the inside and in the
trunk. A total of 16.3 cubic feet of cargo volume is provided.
The makers at Dodge aren’t stingy with the features either.
Air conditioning, an AM/FM radio with in-dash 4-disc CD changer,
cruise control, power mirrors, windows and door locks, a digital
clock and a rear defogger are just part of the standard package.
R/T models add a few more
picks to the list. Some of these include a rear spoiler, alloy
wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls,
remote keyless entry and an Infinity sound system.
Leather upholstery is available
on R/T models as part of a Leather Interior Package. Also
in the deal are a 6-way power passenger seat, a universal
garage door opener, an automatic day/night rearview mirror,
an outside temperature indicator and a compass.
