Used 2004 Ford Escape XLS

Buying Guide for the Ford Escape XLS:

It’s one of Ford’s policies to offer numerous model trims with each of its models. This gives customers from all walks of life the opportunity to pick a level of standard equipment that fits their needs.

If you want a bare-bones trim—no problem. You want decadence? Not an issue. The same can be said with the Escape, Ford’s fresh compact sport utility vehicle. XLS models consist of a base XLS Value trim and a straight XLS model. They are less expensive than XLT and Limited models (covered in a separate review), but lack none of the fire.

The Escape is a relatively new vehicle. It was first introduced in 2001, and expects a redesign for 2005. Still, the four-door wagon offers a number of new packages to up the variety.

Under the Hood

XLS Value models are fitted with a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine. It produces a max of 127 horsepower at 5400 rpm and 135 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm. Mated to this engine is a 5-speed manual transmission.

XLS models have more jump out of the gate. They employ a 3.0-liter V6 engine mated to 4-speed automatic transmission. The result is 201 horsepower at 5900 rpm and 196 lb-ft of torque at 4700 rpm. XLS models offer an all-wheel drive configuration as well.

The 2004 Escape handles like a compact SUV should: very responsively. It uses MacPherson strut front suspension to isolate road forces, with an independent rear suspension for a smooth ride.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The four-door Escape seats a total of five passengers. It features a rear liftgate with separate-opening flip-up glass. This lets you easily access the 69.2 cubic feet of cargo volume.

Each and every Escape model has a rear seating systems that can be folded flat for increased cargo space. The rear-seat cushion is removable, further enhancing load-carrying capacity.

While many of the Escape’s options deals are reserved for upper level trims, there are still a few to be had with the XLS half of the family. One package is titled simply the Convenience Group. It includes cruise control, floormats and a perimeter alarm system. Other options are offered as stand-alone items.
