2004 Ford Escape (XLT and Limited Models) Review:
Though a compact sport utility model, the Escape has no problem
morphing a little to provide extra cargo space. After all,
that’s what engineers are paid to do. Escape’s designers gave
the SUV a rear seating system that can be folded flat for
increased cargo space. To further enhance load-carrying capacity,
the rear-seat cushion can also be removed.
The XLT and Limited trims are the top of the line when it
comes to 2004 Escape models. They have power, grace, style
and comfort all wrapped up in one nice package. Ford knows
how to spoil customers that are willing to spend a little,
and the Escape is just one example of this.
Occupant safety is also addressed. Driver and front passenger
airbags are standard, as are front-seat belt pretensioners
combined with load limiting retractors. In a crash, these
pretensioners automatically tighten the belts, while the load
limiters are designed to reduce the risk of chest injuries
in severe collisions. Escape Limited models also have side
airbags for the driver and front passenger.
Under the Hood
Both XLT and Limited models house a 3.0-liter V6 engine.
They also use 4-speed automatic transmission. The result is
201 horsepower at 5900 rpm and 196 lb-ft of torque at 4700
rpm.
Customers can choose between a front-wheel drive setup or
a full-time four-wheel drive system that lets the driver choose
two different settings: 4x4 Auto or 4x4 ON.
When properly equipped, the Escape has the ability to tow
up to 3,500 pounds. 2004 models use MacPherson strut front
suspension to isolate road forces. At the rear, an independent
suspension contributes to a smooth, bump-less ride.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The four-door Escape seats a total of five passengers. It
features a rear liftgate with separate-opening flip-up glass.
This lets you easily access the 69.2 cubic feet of cargo volume.
The XLT and Limited half of the 2004 lineup let you enjoy
hours of music with a standard AM/FM/CD player with an in-dash
6-disc CD changer. The Limited model really wraps you in style
with leather upholstery and a leather-coated steering wheel.
There are a number of new options groups for 2004. One such
deal, available with Limited models, is a Luxury Comfort Package.
It includes a handy rear-obstacle-detection system, heated
front seats and mirrors and a Mach sound system.
