Used 2004 Ford Excursion

Buying Guide for the Ford Excursion:

The XLS, XLS Limo and XLT trims of the Ford Excursion may occupy the lower half of the ladder in terms of standard features, but they are still massive, roomy vehicles. After all, the Excursion is quite easily the biggest sport utility vehicle on the planet.

Being the biggest on the block has its obvious advantages. Strength, roominess and comfort are pretty much a given with any Excursion. You can carry ridiculous amounts of cargo, trample over most anything that gets in your way, and handle all sorts of road conditions.

Of course, there are some disadvantages. Parallel parking on tight city streets is a bit of an issue, and the Excursion doesn’t exactly break any records for the best gas mileage either. However, if you have open space and require a mammoth vehicle, there ain’t nothing better than the 2004 Ford Excursion.

Under the Hood

There are three rugged engines available with this year’s Excursion. The standard powertrain consists of a 5.3-liter V8 engine that delivers 255 horsepower at 4500 rpm and 350 lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm. 4-speed automatic is the transmission.

XLS Limo models use a 6.8-liter V10 engine with 310 horsepower at 4250 rpm and 425 lb-ft of torque at 3250 rpm. Like the XLS, the XLT can be fitted with the V8, the V10 or a 6.0-liter turbodiesel V8 engine. It uses 5-speed automatic transmission and cranks out an eye-popping 325 horsepower at 3300 rpm and 550 lb-ft of torque at 2000 rpm.

When properly equipped, the Excursion has a maximum towing capacity of 11,000 pounds, which is far from shabby. Not surprisingly, the Excursion is available with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

There’s no doubting the Excursion’s size, and the resulting interior space that comes with it. The four-door Excursion will handle nine passengers without a hint of a problem. There are 146.4 cubic feet of cargo volume to play with as well.

Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard, and power-adjustable pedals are available on all models.

For 2004, a rear-obstacle-detection system and a DVD rear entertainment system are available on all but the base XLS model. The former is certainly useful when backing the big SUV up. In addition, last year’s optional telescoping trailer-tow mirrors gain integrated turn signals.
