2004 Ford Expedition XLT NBX and Eddie Bauer Review:
At the top of a five-model lineup, the XLT NBX and Eddie
Bauer versions of the 2004 Ford Expedition are known for their
high levels of comfort. Actually, this is only half true.
The NBX model is new this year. It replaces the old XLT FX4
as the four-wheel drive king of the Expedition family.
So the real luxury model of the group, which is known for
its high level of refinement, is the Eddie Bauer trim. It
resembles other Eddie Bauer Ford vehicles with its Arizona
Beige two-tone exterior appearance and Arizona Beige running
boards. Also included in the mix are steering-wheel-mounted
audio and climate controls, dual electronic temperature control
and two-tone leather-trimmed front captain’s chairs.
There are two engines with the 2004 Expedition, and plenty
of ruggedness all around—especially with the NBX. Expedition
is available with rear-wheel drive or Ford's ControlTrac 4WD
that can be left engaged on dry pavement and includes low-range
gearing.
Under the Hood
The two-wheel drive Eddie Bauer model uses a 4.6-liter V8
engine. It is mated to 4-speed automatic transmission and
produces 232 horsepower at 4750 rpm and 291 lb-ft of torque
at 3450 rpm.
Available for both two-wheel drive and four-wheel Eddie Bauer
trims and standard with the NBX model is a 5.4-liter V8. It
pumps out 260 horsepower at 4500 pm and 350 lb-ft of torque
at 2500 rpm.
Intended for the rough side of driving, the new NBX consists
of a package that also looks the part. It features durachrome
steel wheels, skid plates, premium Sachs shocks, a cargo area
soft liner with storage bag and heavy duty rubber floor mats.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Though not as big as the Excursion, the Ford Expedition is
still rightfully placed in the full-size SUV category. It
comes with three rows of seats and is available with a front
bench seat for nine-passenger capacity.
The Expedition interior provides versatility with a fold-flat-into-the-floor
third row 60/40 seat and a 40/20/40 second row seat with manual
sliding section. This helps make use of the Expedition’s best-in-class
cargo volume of 110.5 cubic feet.
Some of the options for 2004 include four-corner load-leveling
air suspension, limited-slip axle, a power moonroof, a Reverse
Sensing System, in-dash navigation and a DVD entertainment
system.
