Ford Expedition XLT - NBX and Eddie Bauer
2004 Ford Expedition (XLS, XLT and XLT Sport Models) Review:
A step down from the near-ridiculous Excursion in terms of
size is Ford’s other full-size sport utility vehicle, the
Expedition. Like its bigger sibling and similar to most Ford
models, the Expedition is offered in many different trim levels,
each with varying degrees of standard equipment (the rest
of the lineup is covered separately).
Spreading out the goods allows Ford to reel in more customers,
which certainly isn’t a bad thing if you’re on the Ford payroll.
The XLS, XLT and XLT Sport models are the bottom three of
five.
Safety is an aspect of driving that Ford doesn’t take lightly.
The 2004 Expedition offers load-leveling suspension and Ford's
AdvanceTrac traction-control/antiskid system. Also available
are head-protecting curtain side airbags for the first two
seating rows. They protect occupants in the event of side
collisions and in rollover accidents.
Under the Hood
There are two engines offered for 2004. The standard model
is a 4.6-liter V8 engine. It is mated to 4-speed automatic
transmission and has the ability to generate up to 232 horsepower
at 4750 rpm and 291 lb-ft of torque at 3450 rpm.
XLT and XLT Sport models can be upgraded for more power.
The engine available is a 5.4-liter V8 that pumps out 260
horsepower at 4500 pm and 350 lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm.
It too uses 4-speed automatic transmission.
The ability to tow is a given with any Expedition. The 4.6-liter
engine uses an 8.8-inch rear axle gear, while the 5.4-liter
delivers power through a 9.75-inch axle. When properly equipped,
the 5.4-liter, two-wheel drive Expedition is rated to tow
up to 8,950 pounds. The 4.6-liter V-8 with four-wheel drive
can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The 2003 Expedition received a major redesign, and 2004 sees
a bit of model shuffling to keep up with the changes. The
XLS is now the base trim, while the XLT Sport is a brand new
model that features a unique exterior appearance package.
For 2004, a Reverse Sensing System, a DVD rear seat entertainment
system and a power moonroof are now available across all XLT
and XLT Sport models. A tire-pressure monitor is part of their
package for 2004 as well.
Standard across the lineup are four-wheel antilock disc brakes
with the Brake Assist system.
