2004 Ford Explorer NBX, Eddie Bauer and Limited Review:
The award-winning, best-selling Explorer confidently pulls
into 2004 with an air of nonchalance that is certainly well
deserved. The success of the Explorer is such that manufacturers
could probably just offer the same model, year after year,
without people turning away.
But that’s not at all what Ford’s about to do. Instead, they’ve
upgraded the midsize sport utility vehicle further for 2004.
Models now have more standard equipment, and there are additional
options available as well.
This is especially so with the NBX, Eddie Bauer and Limited
models, the three most expensive trims in the family (XLS
and XLT models covered separately). The former is an off-road
model, while the latter two are pure class. With the NBX,
2004 sees last year’s off-road package now standard, a moonroof
offered and a distinct NBX badge standard.
Under the Hood
Customers can choose either rear-wheel drive or Ford’s ControlTrac
4WD system with the 2004 Explorer. However, as it is designed
for the trails, the NBX model only uses 4WD. Standard this
year on Eddie Bauer and Limited models is a highly useful
tire-pressure monitor.
Two engines are available for 2004. One is a 4.0-liter V6
with 210 horsepower at 5100 rpm and 254 lb-ft of torque at
3700 rpm. The other is a stronger 4.6-liter V8 engine. It
delivers 239 horsepower at 4750 rpm and 282 lb-ft of torque
at 4000 rpm.
All Explorer models serve your trailering needs quite well.
The standard receiver hitch offers Class II towing capability.
A towing package provides Class III/IV towing capability of
up to 7,140 pounds when properly equipped.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The improvements to the Explorer just keep coming. For 2004,
there is second-row sport bucket seating on Eddie Bauer and
Limited editions with a third-row seat for increased comfort.
In addition, auxiliary climate control is now offered for
all rear seating positions.
While the NBX focuses on conquering tough terrain, Eddie
Bauer and Limited models are content to achieve maximum convenience.
A memory system (driver seat, pedals), steering-wheel radio
and climate controls, power-adjustable pedals and an Audiophile
AM/FM radio with in-dash 6-disc CD changer are standard.
Some of the options for 2004 include front and second-row
curtain side airbags, a rear-obstacle detection system (Eddie
Bauer and Limited) and a DVD system (Eddie Bauer and Limited).
