2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Review:
The Ford Explorer Sport Trac lineup is trimmed down for 2004.
No longer is the innovative vehicle offered as a two-door
model. Instead, only four-door versions of the crew-cab SUV
will sit on the lot.
Just what is a crew-cab SUV, one might ask? Well, it’s essentially
a cross between a pickup truck and a sport utility vehicle.
That means the Sport Trac a four-door, five-passenger cabin
along with a 4-foot cargo bed in the rear. That versatility
is a primary characteristic of the Ford Explorer Sport Trac
should come as no surprise.
There are quite a few new items with this year’s Sport Trac.
For starters, the lineup consists of four models: XLS, XLT,
XLT Premium and an Adrenalin package. The latter is quite
self-explanatory, as it features such things as chrome alloy
wheels, fog lights, side step bars and a Pioneer AM/FM radio
with in-dash 6-disc CD/MP3 changer.
Under the Hood
There is one engine offered for all four trims. It is a durable
4.0-liter V6, and it delivers 210 horsepower at 5200 rpm and
245 lb-ft of torque at 3000 rpm. 5-speed automatic is the
transmission across the board.
For 2004, FFV Engine capability allows the Explorer Sport
Trac’s V6 engine to operate on traditional gasoline or ethanol
85 blended fuel. It also provides an estimated fuel economy
of 16/20 mpg for two-wheel drive models, and 15/20 mpg for
four-wheel drive models.
Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard on all Sport Trac
models. So too are child safety seat tether anchors in the
rear seating positions and rear-door child safety locks. Curtain
side airbags are optional.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Explorer Sport Trac will drive you all over the place.
Plus, it has 29.6 cubic feet of cargo space in its standard
cargo bed, which measures 50 inches long and 19.7 inches deep.
The standard floor console includes two large front cup holders,
an open front storage area, convenience clip, two pop-out
rear cup holders and a hinged armrest that allows access to
a removable soft pack storage bag with adjustable shoulder
strap.
Explorer Sport Trac comes standard with an AM/FM/CD stereo.
XLT and XLT Premium models have two optional audio systems:
an AM/FM/CD and cassette player, or a Pioneer 285-watt audio
system that features an in-dash six-disc CD stereo.
