2004 Ford F-150 FX4 and Lariat Models Review:
New and not a bit shy about showing it off to the world,
the 2004 Ford F-150 family of full-size pickup trucks is much
improved. 2004 F-150s are more stylish, roomier, stronger,
more rugged and, when all things are said and done, that much
better than before.
The FX4 is new and is aimed straight at outdoor enthusiasts.
It features standard four-wheel drive and combines off-road
capability with a bold design. FX4 models are available in
regular cab, SuperCab and SuperCrew body styles. Customers
have a choice of box configurations: 6.5-ft Styleside, 6.5-ft
Flareside or a new 55-foot Styleside, depending on cab choice.
The ultimate blend of ruggedness and refinement can be found
with the 2004 F-150 Lariat. The Lariat features optional premium
heated dual power leather captain's chairs with a unique flow-through
console and floor shifter or a standard 40/20/40 leather split
bench seat.
Under the Hood
Both models use an improved 5.4-liter V8 engine. Even though
the previous 5.4-liter was award-wining, apparently the makers
at Ford weren’t satisfied. The new 5.4-liter V8 gets a 15-percent
upgrade in power, resulting in specs of 300 horsepower at
5000 rpm and 365 lb-ft of torque at 3750 rpm.
FX4 models are equipped with special off-road suspension,
limited-slip differential and a 2-speed transfer case. They
have special tires designed to grip all sorts of road conditions
and benefit from the new F-150 frame, which is said to be
nine times stiffer torsionally than its predecessor.
Along with their new ultra-stiff boxed frames, the ride of
2004 F-150 models is even more stable. This is primarily due
to new outboard rear shock absorbers and wider rear leaf springs.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
All cabs now have four doors and are six inches longer and
four inches taller. Regular cabs and extended cabs have rear-hinged
back doors; crew cabs have four full doors.
Inside, the FX4 has what Ford calls "warm steel"
accents on the instrument panel, center console, doors and
steering wheel. Optional captain's chairs can be had in either
sporty cloth or sporty leather.
Unique Lariat features include an in-dash message center,
electronic automatic temperature control and power-adjustable
memory seats and pedals. Options include Beige lower two-tone
paint treatment, chrome bumpers and a unique grille, along
with 18-inch bright aluminum wheels.
