2004 Ford F-150 Heritage Review:
While most 2004 F-150s underwent a big redesign resulting
in more power, revised styling, increased dimensions and more
standard equipment (covered in separate reviews), Ford also
decided to keep an old-school F-150 for this year’s blitz
of models.
Appropriately titled the F-150 Heritage, the vintage full-size
pickup keeps the 1997-design. It is offered in XL and XLT
trims, in both regular cab and extended SuperCab body styles.
Regular cabs have two side doors, while SuperCab extended
cabs add two back-hinged rear doors that do not open independently
of the front doors. Both cabs offer 6.5 or 8-ft flat-side
Styleside cargo beds; there's also a 6.5-ft flare-fender Flareside
for regular cabs
Carrying over as well for the Heritage model is the SVT Lightning.
It is definitely the high-octane trim of the lot. Ford couldn’t
stand parting ways with the old F-150, so it kept it going
for one more year. There are probably many out there who are
glad that they did.
Under the Hood
Regular cab models are fitted with a 4.2-liter V6 engine.
It delivers up to 202 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 252 lb-ft
of torque at 3400 rpm. SuperCab models are bigger, and require
a stronger engine. Duly noted by Ford, who assigns them with
a 4.6-liter V8 with 231 horsepower at 4750 rpm and 293 lb-ft
of torque at 3500 rpm.
All models except the SVT Lightning can be had with either
rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive that must be disengaged
on dry pavement but includes low-range gearing. 4-speed automatic
and 5-speed manual transmissions are offered.
The SVT Lightning is more of a show-off pickup truck than
anything. It is a two-wheel drive model that uses a 5.4-liter
supercharged V8 with an amazing 380 horsepower at 4750 rpm
and 450 lb-ft of torque at 3250 rpm. Limited-slip differential
and special sport suspension are also part of this speedster’s
package.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
SuperCabs include a three-passenger rear bench seat, which
gives them enough seating spaces for six (with a front bench
seat).
Midlevel XLT trims have a nicely appointed list of standard
features. Power mirrors, windows and door locks, remote keyless
entry, an AM/FM/CD player, an overhead console, a compass
and an outside-temperature indicator are all part of the deal.
Extra items include a trailer tow package and an optional
rear axle ratio.
