2004 Ford F-250/F-350 Super Duty Review:
If you need a full-size pickup truck for work applications,
or just for good old hard work, you can do a lot worse than
Ford’s lineup of Super Duty models. There are plenty to choose
from, all over the 8,500-pound GVWR segment, including ¾-ton
F-250s and full 1-ton F-350s.
Ford makes three different body styles available for 2004:
regular cab, SuperCab extended cab and Crew Cab. In addition,
there are three main trims available: XL, XLT and Lariat.
These models come with a choice of three different engines,
a solid frame and numerous safety features. For extra payload
capacity, F-350 models are available with a dual-rear-wheel
configuration.
Under the Hood
The standard engine for the lot is a 5.4-liter V6. It can
be mated to either 6-speed manual transmission or 4-speed
automatic. At full throttle, the V6 can put out 260 horsepower
at 4500 rpm and 350 lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm.
One of the optional engines for 2004 is a 6.8-liter V10.
It is big, bad and strong and produces 310 horsepower at 4250
rpm and 425 lb-ft of torque at 3250 rpm. When properly equipped,
models with this engine have a towing capacity of up to 14,200
pounds.
The other available engine is a 6.0-liter turbodiesel V8
with 325 horsepower at 3300 rpm and 550 lb-ft of torque at
2000 rpm. It boasts the highest horsepower and torque in its
class. Built specially for this engine, Ford's optional TorqShift
automatic transmission has an improved torque converter that
maximizes low-speed torque and a larger pump for better lubrication
and cooling.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Even though these models are designed to conquer heavy tasks,
they also let occupants experience a nice interior setting.
One of the changes for 2004 sees a new 60/40 Crew Cab rear
bench seat with fold-flat load floor, grocery hooks, integrated
cup holders and head restraints on XLT and Lariat trims.
If you really want to deck out an F-250 or F-350, a King
Ranch package is ready and willing to serve. It features quad
captain chairs, heated front seats, front and rear consoles,
unique interior trim, two-tone paint, illuminated cab steps
and painted alloy wheels.
Coming later in the year is a special Harley Davidson model.
It will have 18-inch aluminum wheels, engine decal, chrome
exhaust tip, chrome tubular step bar with Harley-Davidson
Bar & Shield insert and other styling cues.
