2004 Ford Focus Review:
If you spend a lot of time on the road, one thing you’re
going to see are plenty of Ford Focus models zipping by. The
innovative car that was first tested in Europe and later unleashed
on America in 2000 has been quite a success story since its
introduction.
The reasons for this are many. The Focus has plenty of storage
space and convenience features, it is safe, it comes in many
different styles and, maybe most importantly, it is offered
at a reasonable price.
The word variety may be an understatement when speaking of
the 2004 Focus model lineup. Along with four different engines—three
of which are a variation of a durable I4—there are also numerous
trims and options packages available. And, to top it off,
the Focus comes as a four-door sedan, four-door wagon, or
as a hatchback with two or four doors
Under the Hood
Trying to figure out which engine goes with which Ford Focus
model for 2004 is quite a task. The first thing to discuss
is the use of a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine size. It
finds its way under the hood of most Focus models. For example,
the base LX has a 2.0-liter I4 with 110 horsepower and 125
lb-ft of torque.
With SE, ZX3 and ZX5 models (in most states), a 130-horsepower
2.0-liter Zetec I4 is offered. This engine is matched with
a 5-speed manual transaxle designed with low-friction needle-roller
bearings to help improve fuel economy and performance.
Another engine is a 2.3-liter I4 that produces 145 horsepower
and 149 lb-ft of torque. It is used by ZTS models. Finally,
sporty SVT models feature the strongest of all the 2.0-liter
I4s. It delivers 170 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Regardless if it’s a two-door hatchback, a four-door hatchback,
a four-door sedan or wagon, all 2004 Focus models will seat
five. The wagon rounds in with the most total cargo volume
at an even 73 cubic feet.
With seven trims to choose from, it’s safe to say there’s
one right for you. Inside, fabrics have been rigorously tested
to ensure that they hold up to harsh sunlight that can fade
materials.
Options for 2004 include traction control, leather upholstery,
heated front seats, a sunroof and, for SVTs, high-intensity
headlights.
