2004 Ford Mustang Review:
It was forty years ago that the Mustang first revved up its
engines. What followed was a stirring run of success that
continues to this day. In fact, there aren’t many signs that
hint at a slowdown in Mustang popularity. The original pony
car is just as appealing now as it was four decades ago.
To commemorate forty years of high performance, every 2004
Mustang model will wear special anniversary badges. In the
small-specialty segment, every inch is hotly contest. And
more often than not, the rest of the pack is trailing the
Ford Mustang.
The Mustang awaits a new redesign in 2005, and so most 2004
models receive little in the way of changes. However, they’re
undoubtedly as modern as any car on the road.
Under the Hood
With the base group of models, which consists of Standard,
Deluxe and Premium trims, a 3.8-liter V6 engine is used. It
produces 193 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 225 lb-ft of torque
at 2800 rpm. 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission
is available for most models.
The rest of the pack employs a 4.6-liter V8, with varying
levels of power. GT Deluxe and GT Premium models get 260 horsepower
at 5250 rpm and 302 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. Up next is
the Mach 1 model, which squeezes out 310 horsepower at 6000
rpm and 335 lb-ft of torque at 4200 rpm.
The fastest of all the rear-wheel drive 2004 Mustang models
is the Cobra. It pushes the 4.6-liter V8 to the max, generating
390 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 390 lb-ft of torque at 3500
rpm. 6-speed manual transmission is used with Cobra models.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
As usual, the Mustang comes as a fastback coupe or a convertible
with power top and glass rear window. Seating is for four
people.
The 2004 Mustang is quieter than ever before. It has reduced
wind noise thanks to expandable foam seals around the body,
particularly the outside door handles and belt moldings on
both doors.
A 40th Anniversary Package is offered with Base
Premium and GT Premium models. It includes stainless-steel
pedals, leather-wrapped shift knob, aluminum-finish door-lock
posts and shift boot ring, a 4-way head-restraint system,
folding mirrors, unique interior and exterior trim, special
badging and special alloy wheels.
