2004 Ford Ranger XLT Review:
Like anyone looking to redefine himself or herself-a restless
teen, middle age person or an older citizen-sometimes the
simplest of changes can do wonders. A new look often means
a new lease on life. If it does, scratch in a few more years
of life for the best-selling Ford Ranger.
The compact 2004 Ford Ranger features a new 'nostril' grille.
Two-wheel drive Rangers get horizontal bars, while four-wheel
drive models have a honeycomb design. In addition, there's
a newly raised dome hood-standard on all trim levels.
And there are plenty of trim levels to choose from, as usual.
At the heavy-end in terms of price are the XLT and XLT FX4
trims. The former is the most elegant of the lot-if you can
ever say a rugged truck is elegant. The latter is pure 4x4
adrenaline.
Under the Hood
Two-wheel drive Ranger XLTs start off with a 2.3-liter inline
4-cylinder engine with 5-speed manual transmission. It produces
143 horsepower and 154 lb-ft of torque. However, that's the
just the beginning.
The next available engine with two-wheel drive XLT models
is a 3.0-liter V6 that generates 154 horsepower and 180 lb-ft
of torque. It offers 5-speed automatic transmission.
The final engine, standard with 4WD XLT models and the XLT
FX4, is a 4.0-liter V6 with 207 horsepower and 238 lb-ft of
torque. With the XLT FX4, the design focuses on the more adventurous
side of truck driving. To this end, BF Goodrich tires, Bilstein
shocks and a Torsen limited- slip differential are available.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The 2004 Ranger is offered in regular-cab and extended SuperCab
body styles. SuperCabs are available with back-hinged rear
doors and add an extra seat for a capacity of five. Regular
cabs use a 6 or 7-ft straightside cargo bed; SuperCabs get
a 6-ft version.
There are quite a few options available this year, ranging
from comfort features to additional performance additives.
One group option is a bright appearance package, which includes
chromed bedrails, side step bars and exhaust tip.
For listening aficionados, there's a premium Pioneer package
offered. It features an AM/FM six-disc CD/MP3 stereo, multi-channel
amplifier, subwoofer, premium speakers, front bucket seats
and tilt wheel with speed control.
