2004 Ford Ranger (XL, Edge and Tremor Models) Review:
The wildly popular Ford Ranger gets quite a few upgrades
for 2004, and all of them are good. New Rangers have improved
performance features, new interior styling and a tougher exterior
look. In addition, there’s an all-new Pioneer audio system
offered for music lovers.
The 2004 Ranger keeps up with its reputation as being one
of the safer compact pickup trucks out there. It features
second-generation airbags and safety belts with outboard pretensioners,
side intrusion door beams and a theft-deterrent system.
The Ford Ranger is offered in regular-cab and extended SuperCab
body styles. SuperCabs are available with back-hinged rear
doors. Regular cabs use a 6 or 7-ft straightside cargo bed;
SuperCabs get the 6-ft version. A 6-ft flare-fender Flareside
bed is optional.
Under the Hood
If you want to be able to choose your powertrain, you’ve
come to the right place. Base XL models offer a 2.3-liter
inline 4-cylinder engine with 143 horsepower and 154 lb-ft
of torque or a 3.0-liter V6. It generates 154 horsepower and
180 lb-ft of torque. The I4 features new intake and exhaust
camshafts, throttle body, exhaust manifold and engine calibration.
Edge and Edge Plus models can be equipped with the 3.0-liter
V6 or a 4.0-liter V6 with 207 horsepower and 238 lb-ft of
torque. This same engine choice is available with Tremor and
Tremor Plus trims.
Ranger's suspension has improved bushings, springs, tires
and shocks for more ride comfort. Tremor and Edge models feature
improved shock tuning and larger wheels and tires.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Thanks to an all-new seat system with sculpted bolsters and
higher seatbacks, the ride inside the 2004 Ford Ranger got
that much better. If that’s not good enough, optional sport
bucket seats and leather-trimmed seating surfaces are available.
The new Pioneer Stereo System features an AM/FM CD/MP3 player
that delivers 290 peak watts of power through nine speakers
and an integrated power subwoofer. The Tremor’s system cranks
out 510 watts of power through a new in-dash CD/MP3 player.
There are plenty of options offered for 2004. While many
of the packages are reserved for uplevel trims like the XLT
(covered separately), there are still stand-alones readily
available. Air conditioning, leather upholstery, a bedliner,
a bed extender and trailer hitch are just some of the names
out there.
