2004 Ford Taurus Review:
One thing Ford knows how to do is make vehicles that last
for a long, long time. There's the F-150, with over fifty
years of history at its back. There's also the Explorer, a
perennial best-selling midsize SUV that shows no sign of ever
slowing down.
And then there's the Ford Taurus. Almost twenty years old,
the Taurus line of midsize wagons and sedans is as popular
today as it ever was. Since its introduction, Taurus sales
have averaged more than 350,000 units every year. In other
words, Taurus continues to be one of the 10 best-selling vehicles
in the entire United States.
Safety, comfort and affordability are three trademarks that
have allowed this to happen. For 2004, the Taurus has new
styling at both ends, improved performance features and new
instrument modifications. This is all done for a reason: Ford
doesn't want to mess with their winning combination.
Under the Hood
Base LX models are equipped with a 3.0-liter V6. It delivers
an even 155 horsepower at 4900 rpm and 185 lb-ft of torque
at 3900 rpm. The other engine in the stable is a 3.0-liter
V6 with 201 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 207 lb-ft of torque
at 4500 rpm.
The front-wheel drive Taurus promises to handle better than
ever before in 2004. It uses a 4-speed automatic transmission
with adaptive shift control programming. New transmission
improvements include fast-acting hydraulics and an enhanced
torque converter.
For each body style there is an individual suspension package.
Sedan models use an independent MacPherson strut front suspension
and quadralink rear suspension, while wagons have a short-
and long-arm rear suspension with nitrogen pressurized shocks
and progressive-rate springs.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Taurus comes in two styles to fit the diverse needs of
customers. Both models have four doors and while the sedan
can seat six, the wagon can hold up to eight people. It also
provides 81.3 cubic feet of cargo space.
The new look of the 2004 Taurus starts at the front and goes
all the way round to the rear. A fresh egg crate design for
the front grille and front fascia is complimented by new tail
lamps and rear fascia.
SEL models are at the top of the lot. They have such items
as automatic climate control, power-adjustable pedals, a leather-wrapped
steering wheel and an AM/FM/cassette player with 6-disc CD
changer.
