2004 GMC Canyon Review:
GMC is a tough-as-nails division of GM. The manufacturer
is known for producing what it calls Professional Grade trucks.
The latest incarnation of this commitment to the mantra of
hard works is the Canyon, a compact pickup truck with a lot
to offer.
To begin with, the compact Canyon pushes the very bounds
of the segment. More like a midsize model than anything else,
the new Canyon is spacious and powerful. Fit for street driving
and work applications, the Canyon can also rightfully brag
about being versatile.
There are many different models to choose from, with different
suspension settings and body styles adding even more to the
diversity of the line. Available in regular, extended, and
crew-cab body styles, the Canyon ranges from a two-door, three-seater
to a four-door, six-seater.
Under the Hood
The new Canyon gets two equally new inline engines: a Vortec
2800 inline 4-cylinder, and an optional Vortec 3500 inline
5-cylinder. Both are based on the award-winning engine introduced
in the 2002 GMC Envoy.
The Vortec 2800 is a 2.8-liter I4 with 175 horsepower at
5600 rpm and 185 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm. The Vortec 3500
lets you increase the ruggedness of the new pickup to the
tune of 220 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 225 lb-ft of torque
at 2800 rpm.
Both engines feature electronic throttle control, variable
valve timing and coil-on-plug ignition. In addition, both
can be had with a new 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed
automatic transmission.
Two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations are both
offered. Available on all body styles and with 2WD and 4WD
is an optional Z71 off-road suspension, which adds an elevated
ground clearance.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
These new pickups from GMC give owners flexible hauling capabilities.
Most models get a 6-foot cargo box (5-foot cargo box on crew
cabs), along with two-tier loading and a locking tailgate.
The Canyon isn't in the luxury class, however. The price
reflects that, as well as the toughness that sometimes gets
lost in the process of loading on the features. Still, GMC's
new pickup comes with an AM/FM stereo and an optional in-dash
6-disc CD player.
The OnStar safety and security system and XM Satellite Radio
(continental U.S. only) are also available. Leather upholstery
and heated front seats are offered with the top-line SLE crew
cab.
