2004 GMC Envoy XUV Review:
Innovation is what pushes the entire automotive industry.
A clever design, new functionality and new safety features
in turn breed increased competition, which in the end benefits
the average car buyer more than he or she may know.
The new GMC Envoy XUV is one such model that will surely
find copycats in the future. It has a power sliding roof section
over its cargo area. Located behind the rear seat is a midgate
with a power-down glass window that folds with the rear seats
to extend the length of the cargo floor. In addition, the
new Envoy XUV has a dual-action tailgate that drops or swings
open on side hinges.
The power-sliding design of this unique rear end lets drivers
configure the Envoy XUV to their hauling needs at the push
of a button. Surely other vehicles will come up with features
like this in the future, but the 2004 Envoy XUV can always
say it was the first.
Under the Hood
But the functionality certainly doesn't end there. Under
the new Envoy XUV's hood is an award-winning Vortec 4200 4.2-liter,
24-valve, dual-overhead-cam inline 6-cylinder engine. It is
rated at 275 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque-the segment's
most powerful base engine.
For customers who need even more power, there's an optional
Vortec 5300 5.3-liter V8 engine. It produces 290 horsepower
and 325 lb-ft of torque.
Of course, two-wheel drive and four-wheel configurations
are both offered. With the optional Vortec 5300 engine, the
Envoy XUV provides towing capacities of 6,500 pounds for 2WD
models and 6,400 pounds for 4WD models.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The four-door Envoy XUV sits five passengers tops. Another
useful feature of the new model is the all-weather nature
of the cargo area. It features a QuickDrain system that can
channel as much as 35 gallons (132L) of water per minute out
of the cargo area.
Top line SLT models are simply loaded with comfort features.
Heated front seats, leather upholstery, 8-way power front
seats, driver-seat and mirror memory, dual-zone automatic
climate controls, steering-wheel radio and climate controls,
rear radio controls and the OnStar telematics system are just
part of the total.
A rear-seat DVD entertainment system, front side airbags
and an AM/FM radio with an in-dash 6-disc CD changer head
the optional equipment.
