2004 GMC Envoy Review:
The GMC Envoy and its big
brother, the Envoy XL, have received Consumer Guide’s “Recommended”
distinction for two years running because the midsize SUV
blends power, towing ability, roominess and comfort together.
With all of this wrapped up under a nice price tag, it isn’t
hard to figure out why.
But that’s hardly the end
of the accolades. Over the years the Envoy has earned Motor
Trend's "2002 Sport/Utility of the Year," Sport
Truck Magazine's "Truck of the Year " for 2002 and
African American On Wheels and Latinos On Wheels 2002 "Urban
Wheels" award.
For 2004, the Envoy family
grows with the introduction of the brand-new Envoy XUV (covered
separately), a model with a power sliding roof panel that
is sure to cause a splash in the market.
Under the Hood
Both the Envoy and the Envoy
XL have a standard 4.2-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine mated
to a 4-speed electronic automatic transmission with overdrive.
It can generate up to 275 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 275 lb-ft
of torque at 3600 rpm.
Larger Envoy XLs offer an
optional 5.3-liter Vortec V8 engine as well. Meaner and stronger,
it can dish out 290 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 325 lb-ft of
torque at 4000 rpm and is mated to the same 4-speed automatic
transmission. This gives the Envoy XL a towing capacity of
7,100 lbs.
Two-wheel drive and four-wheel
drive configurations are both offered. Rear-wheel models offer
available traction control, while 4WD models have GM's Autotrac
4WD that can be left engaged on dry pavement and includes
low-range gearing.
Standard Features, Options
Packages and Style
Both the Envoy and the Envoy
XL have four full doors. XL models have a 16-inch longer wheelbase
than regular Envoys, an elevated rear roofline and three rows
of seating for seven-person capacity.
The 2004 Envoy lineup’s standard
heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system provides
dual-zone climate control with as much as a 25º F difference
in temperature settings for the driver and front passenger.
Comfort is taken even further with the SLT trim’s premium
leather seating surfaces.
If you want entertainment
while you drive, Envoy can provide it. New for 2004 are optional
XM Satellite Radio, new 175-Series AM/FM radios and optional
electrically adjustable pedals. In addition, DVD movies can
now be played through the vehicle sound system as well as
the wireless headphones.
