2004 GMC Safari Review:
The Safari, GMC’s mid-size
van, has one of the highest horsepower ratings in its class.
A roomy interior cabin and a thorough set of safety features
compliment this power.
As a van designed to carry
loads of people, the Safari is fitted with numerous pieces
of safety equipment to protect everyone concerned. It has
energy-absorbing foam attached behind trim panels, moldings,
the headliner and all other vital areas to protect occupants
from potential head injuries, as well as a standard four-wheel
antilock braking system featuring four-wheel power discs,
a highly responsive Hydroboost hydraulic assist power brake
booster and GM's Dynamic Rear Proportioning.
For 2004, customers can now
order options on an individual basis, rather than in equipment
groups. This gives potential buyers more flexibility when
tailoring their Safari models to their needs.
Under the Hood
Under the Safari’s hood beats
a quick-pumping heart. Its engine is a 4.3-liter V6, able
to provide 190 horsepower at 4400 rpm and 250 lb-ft of torque
at 2800 rpm. It is mated to a 4-speed electronic automatic
transmission with overdrive.
2004 Safari models can come
with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive
models provide the added control that is so prized by parents.
Safari models also come with standard front driver and passenger
airbags, a child security sliding door and the PASSLock theft-deterrent
system
The new brakes on the 2004
Safari result in quicker stops and shorter stopping distances,
and require less pedal force to activate. The advanced braking
system also includes highly audible warning chimes that alert
drivers of a failure or malfunction in the braking system
and the need for repair. The chimes are activated whenever
the red BRAKE or amber ABS telltale is illuminated.
