2004 GMC Savana 3500 Review:
All 2004 GMC Savana models
have automatic transmissions that incorporate GM's unique
Tow/Haul mode, which reduces the frequency of shifting and
improves predictability of shifts during towing. This standard
piece of equipment is just one of many that point to the Savana’s
power and purpose.
As a 1-ton full-size van,
the Savana 3500 is the biggest and baddest of the bunch. And
it is also safe. The 3500 has antilock brakes, driver and
front-passenger safety belts, three-point lap-and-shoulder
belts in all first and second-row seating positions and a
child seat tether-type restraint anchorage system in passenger
vans. Savana also offers heated outboard rearview mirrors
with integrated turn signals.
The 3500 is available in two
body lengths. Extended length models add 20 inches to the
wheelbase of regular length models. They also increase the
seating from twelve to a maximum of fifteen.
Under the Hood
The same engine that is offered
as an option with the smaller ¾-ton 2500 model (covered separately)
is standard with the 2004 Savana 3500. It is a 6.0-liter V8
that will proudly deliver 300 horsepower at 4400 rpm and 360
lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. Mated to this engine is a 4-speed
electronic automatic transmission with overdrive and torque
converter.
For 2004, fifteen-passenger
Savana models (extended length versions) will come with GM’s
StabiliTrak system as standard equipment. This gives even
big vans like the 3500 thorough control.
StabiliTrak works by recognizing
wheel skid. Sensors detect the difference between the steering
wheel angle and the direction the driver is actually turning
by "reading" the steering wheel position, the amount
of sideways force in play, vehicle speed and the vehicle's
response to steering wheel input. It then adjusts the brakes
to keep the vehicle on course.
Standard Features, Options
Packages and Style
Regular length models have
267.3 cubic feet of cargo volume. Extended length models have
a total cargo volume of 316.8 cubic feet.
The 2004 Savana offers an
industry-first 60/40 left-hand-side hinged door. Available
on regular-length passenger vans, it provides driver's-side
access to the second-row seat/cargo compartment and third-row
seat/rear compartment.
Some of the available options
for 2004 include the OnStar system, a heavy-duty battery,
a 7-wire trailer harness, an AM/FM/CD/cassette player and
a rear defogger.
