2004 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab Review:
The 1500 crew cab is new to
the Sierra family, and it promises to be quite popular with
customers. For one thing, it is undoubtedly versatile. Crew
cabs give you the unique combination of a full-size cab with
four doors, a sturdy cargo bed, plus all the perks of a hard-working
truck.
So, with the 2004 Sierra 1500
crew cab, you can spend the whole day working and at night
still take the family out for a night on the town. With this
ability, it’s no surprise GMC decided to introduce a crew
cab to the Sierra lineup.
The 1500 crew cab is offered
in two uplevel trims: SLE and SLT. It doles out the comfort
for the passengers on the inside, and uses the strongest available
engine as standard equipment. Basically, with the crew cab
you have the most interior room and the most power—two things
that are nearly impossible to ignore.
Under the Hood
The aforementioned engine
under the 1500 crew cab’s hood is a 5.3-liter V8. It can muster
295 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque at 4000
rpm. It is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission.
The 2004 Sierra comes in a
rear-wheel drive configuration with optional traction control
or with one of two 4WD systems. The base 4WD setup must be
disengaged on dry pavement. Optional Autotrac 4WD can be left
engaged on dry pavement. Both systems include low-range gearing.
An optional Z82 trailering
package sets you up with all the equipment needed to haul
heavy loads. It features a heavy-duty hitch platform, an integrated
electric brake connection, a wiring harness and a high-capacity
air cleaner.
Standard Features, Options
Packages and Style
Crew cabs come with a new
5-foot, 8-inch cargo bed. Like other Sierras, the crew cab
benefits from a chrome-heavy exterior touch-up. All base models
have an attractive chrome grille-surround, chrome steel wheels,
a chrome rear bumper and cruise control as standard equipment.
Safety is comprehensively
addressed with improved equipment features. A right front
passenger safety-belt reminder lets passengers automatically
know (via a chime and indicator light) if their safety belt
hasn't been fastened. This system compliments the automatic
passenger-sensing airbag system that automatically deactivates
the passenger-side airbag under certain conditions to help
protect smaller occupants.
