2004 GMC Sierra 1500 Extended Cab Review:
If you’re in the market for
a full-size pickup truck, but can’t decide whether you want
one with a two-door cab or a four-door cab, you’re best bet
may be an extended cab model. It has back-hinged rear doors
that don't open independently of the front doors, but do lead
to a three-person rear bench seat.
And if you can’t decide what
kind of full-size pickup to choose, you should not pass up
taking a look at the 2004 GMC Sierra. It has plenty of power,
a tough, sturdy construction and many comfort and safety features.
There are a number of improvements
to the Sierra line for 2004, and the ½-ton 1500 family, which
also includes regular cabs and crew cabs (covered separately),
certainly benefit. Among the changes is a new set of accessories.
These include rear underseat lockable storage, a black soft
tonneau cover, a black hard/folding/lockable tonneau cover,
bed extenders and rail caps and chrome or black tubular assist
steps.
Under the Hood
The extended cab offers Wideside
cargo beds of 6.5 and 8.1 ft, or a flare-fender Sportside
box of 6.5 ft. There are also three trim levels available:
SL, SLE and SLT. SL models with a Wideside short bed have
a 4.3-liter V6 engine with 200 horsepower at 4600 rpm and
260 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm. It can be mated to 5-speed
manual transmission or 4-speed automatic.
SL models with Sportside short
beds have a 4.8-liter V8 model with 285 horsepower at 5600
rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. Standard with top-line
SLT trims (optional with other models) is a 5.3-liter V8.
It puts out 295 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque
at 4000 rpm and only uses 4-speed automatic transmission.
The Sierra comes with rear-wheel
drive with optional traction control or with one of two 4WD
systems. The base 4WD setup must be disengaged on dry pavement.
Optional Autotrac 4WD can be left engaged on dry pavement.
Both systems include low-range gearing.
Standard Features, Options
Packages and Style
With the 2004 Sierra 1500
extended cab’s three-model lineup, customers are given quite
a range to choose from. With SLT models, some of the perks
you get include heated power mirrors, an AM/FM/CD player with
in-dash 6-disc changer and rear tinted glass.
An optional Z82 trailering
package features items such as a heavy-duty hitch platform,
an integrated electric brake connection, wiring harness and
a high-capacity air cleaner.
