2004 GMC Sierra 2500 Review:
Tack a cool ¼-ton on top of
the ½-ton 1500 Sierra and you’ve got the 2500 model, a ¾-ton
beast that relishes the hard work. In terms of full-size pickup
trucks, once you step beyond the ½-ton realm, you start getting
into the big boys.
The big boys know a few things,
and they do them very well. For one, the Sierra 2500 has power,
and plenty of it. It has low-end torque to push its way through
mud and haul heavy loads. Second, the 2500 is every bit as
durable as other Sierra models. Third, it is safe, offering
a comprehensive array of safety features.
GMC is quite proud of its
crew cabs, and the 2500 weight class is no exception. Sierra's
C/K 2500 Series short-box models get additional room to comfortably
seat up to five full-size adults. The 2500 Series Crew Cab
models are also now available in either 2WD or 4WD, and are
rated at a hefty 8,600 pounds GVWR.
Under the Hood
Driving all the trims and
models in the 2500 class is one tough engine. It is a 6.0-liter
V8 model capable of producing 300 horsepower at 4400 rpm and
360 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. 4-speed automatic transmission
is responsible for the shifting. It features GM’s Tow/Haul
mode, which adjusts shift points to maximize power under heavy
loads.
2004 Sierra models offer a
rear-wheel drive configuration with optional traction control,
or two 4WD systems. The base 4WD setup must be disengaged
on dry pavement. Optional Autotrac 4WD can be left engaged
on dry pavement. Both systems include low-range gearing.
An optional Z82 trailering
package sets you up with all the equipment needed to haul
heavy loads. It features a heavy-duty hitch platform, an integrated
electric brake connection, a wiring harness and a high-capacity
air cleaner.
Standard Features, Options
Packages and Style
All 2004 base Sierra models
receive a chrome-filled styling upgrade. This includes a bright
chrome grille-surround, chrome steel wheels, a chrome rear
bumper and cruise control as standard equipment.
Standard safety equipment
includes a new right front passenger safety-belt reminder,
antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and an automatic passenger-sensing
airbag system that automatically deactivates the passenger-side
airbag under certain conditions to help protect smaller occupants.
Optional for crew cabs is
a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, as well as a host of
other adds-ons.
