2004 GMC Sierra 2500HD Review:
Stepping into the heavy-duty
arena of Sierra full-size pickup trucks is like walking into
a locker room filled with adrenaline-pumping athletes. The
sheer strength and aggression of these vehicles is enough
to make a lasting impression.
And then you get inside and
drive one. And then you’re completely sold. The 2500HD series
of Sierras consists of ¾-ton regular cabs, extended cabs and
crew cabs. Regular cabs have two doors, extended cabs have
two additional rear-hinged back half-doors and crew cabs have
four full doors.
The 2500HD regular cab can
seat a maximum of three; the others can accommodate up to
six. An 8-foot cargo bed is available with all configurations.
Extended cabs and crew cabs also offer a shorter 6.5-foot
bed. Power, torque, durability and safety—it’s all included
in the package.
Under the Hood
One engine is reserved for
the standard equipment package across the entire 2004 Sierra
HD lineup (which also includes 3500s, covered separately).
It is a 6.0-liter Vortec V8 model, able to produce 300 horsepower
at 4400 rpm and 360 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. To this engine
is mated 5-speed manual transmission; 4-speed automatic is
optional.
The power doesn’t end there.
For 2004, two additional engines are offered as well. One
is an 8.1-liter Vortec V8 with 340 horsepower at 4200 rpm
and 455 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm. It can be mated to either
6-speed manual transmission or 5-speed automatic with Engine
Grade Braking, an electronic feature that makes an automatic
downshift when descending steep slopes.
A heavy-duty lineup wouldn’t
be complete without an optional diesel engine. The final motor
available for 2004 is a 6.6-liter Duramax Turbodiesel V8 with
300 horsepower at 3100 rpm and 520 lb-ft of torque at 1800
rpm.
Standard Features, Options
Packages and Style
Models in the Sierra heavy-duty
series are available with rear-wheel drive or 4WD that must
be disengaged on dry pavement but includes low-range gearing.
A trailering package is also offered.
There are plenty of comfort
features and different trims available, allowing you to choose
the right amount of standard equipment. From bare bones to
decadence, there is a Sierra HD model right for most everyone.
Crew cabs offer a rear seat
DVD system, which includes a 7-inch flip-down screen, two
sets of wireless (infrared) headphones, a wireless remote
control and three sets of auxiliary video and audio inputs.
