2004 GMC Sierra 3500 Crew Cab Review:
Picture yourself in a 2004
GMC Sierra 3500 crew cab. First off, you are in a near monster
truck. The engine is ultra-strong; you have dual rear wheels
for added traction; you sit high and proud; you can lug around
all sorts of cargo; and in back, there is a full bench seat
to accommodate three full-size adults.
Crew cabs have four full doors,
making entry and exiting a snap. They come in three trims,
SL, SLE and SLT, and offer a short 6.5-ft. bed and a longer
8-ft. bed as well. Heavy loads, muddy trails, family shopping
days—all of this isn’t a problem with the Sierra 3500 crew
cab pickup.
For 2004, GMC introduces the
single-rear-wheel one-ton Sierra 3500. These models are available
in regular cab, extended cab and crew cab configurations with
4WD and a long 8-foot cargo box, and are rated at 9,900 pounds.
In addition, they are also offered in a chassis cab configuration.
Under the Hood
The standard engine is a 6.0-liter
Vortec V8 model. It can generate 300 horsepower at 4400 rpm
and 360 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. 5-speed manual transmission
is standard; 4-speed automatic is optional.
For 2004, two optional engines
are offered. One is an 8.1-liter Vortec V8 with 340 horsepower
at 4200 rpm and 455 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm. It can be
mated to either 6-speed manual transmission or 5-speed automatic
with Engine Grade Braking, an electronic feature that makes
an automatic downshift when descending steep slopes.
The second engine available
for 2004 is a 6.6-liter Duramax Turbodiesel V8 with 300 horsepower
at 3100 rpm and 520 lb-ft of torque at 1800 rpm.
Standard Features, Options
Packages and Style
Models in the Sierra heavy-duty
series are available with rear-wheel drive or 4WD that must
be disengaged on dry pavement but includes low-range gearing.
An optional Z82 trailering package is also offered. It includes
a heavy-duty hitch platform, integrated electric brake connection,
a wiring harness and a high-capacity air cleaner.
With the top-line SLT trim,
owners are treated to such standard features as heated power
mirrors, an AM/FM/CD player with in-dash 6-disc changer coupled
to a premium Bose six-speaker sound system with sub-woofer
and the OnStar system.
Available RDS (Radio Data
System) audio receivers allow vehicles to receive information
such as station call letters, music genre, emergency broadcasts,
song titles and other information.
