2004 GMC Sierra 3500 Review:
Tipping the scales at a hefty
one ton, the 3500 series of Sierra full-size pickups is the
beefiest you can get. Designed primarily for hard-working
days, these models lack nothing when it comes to ruggedness,
strength and towing ability.
The big news for 2004 is the
introduction of single-rear-wheel one-ton Sierra 3500s. These
models are available in regular cab, extended cab and crew
cab configurations with 4WD and a long 8-foot cargo box, and
are rated at 9,900 pounds. In addition, they are also offered
in a chassis cab configuration.
The rest of the 3500 lineup
continues to come with dual rear wheels. This gives the pickup
that added stability, particularly useful when carrying extra
heavy loads. Regular cab 3500s have two doors, extended cabs
have two additional rear-hinged back half-doors and a back
seat.
Under the Hood
One versatile engine powers
the entire 2004 Sierra heavy-duty lineup. It is a 6.0-liter
Vortec V8 model, able to produce 300 horsepower at 4400 rpm
and 360 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. 5-speed manual transmission
is standard; 4-speed automatic is optional.
For 2004, two optional engines
are offered. One is an 8.1-liter Vortec V8 with 340 horsepower
at 4200 rpm and 455 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm. It can be
mated to either 6-speed manual transmission or 5-speed automatic
with Engine Grade Braking, an electronic feature that makes
an automatic downshift when descending steep slopes.
The second engine available
for 2004 is a 6.6-liter Duramax Turbodiesel V8 with 300 horsepower
at 3100 rpm and 520 lb-ft of torque at 1800 rpm.
Standard Features, Options
Packages and Style
Models in the Sierra heavy-duty
series are available with rear-wheel drive or 4WD that must
be disengaged on dry pavement but includes low-range gearing.
An optional Z82 trailering package is also offered. It includes
a heavy-duty hitch platform, integrated electric brake connection,
a wiring harness and a high-capacity air cleaner.
Extended cabs can seat a maximum
of six passengers, though half-dozen full-size adults would
find it to be quite tight. Regular cabs are offered in two
trims: SL and SLE. Extended cabs also come in a top-line SLT
trim, which features such standard items as the OnStar system
and an in-dash 6-disc CD changer.
Plenty of additional options
are also available. One need only point to the list.
