Honda CR-V Review:
With Honda’s CR-V, you’ve got a compact sport utility vehicle
that is ready to hit the road at a moment’s notice. The good
thing is, that road can be either of the paved variety or
the dirt variety.
The CR-V offers a 60/40 split-folding rear seat to accommodate
larger items like tents, golf clubs and bikes. The interior
features a modest amount of standard goods, many of which
are contained in the clean, uncluttered instrument panel.
In other words, you don’t have to go looking around for a
function while at the wheel.
The 2004 Honda CR-V is also safe. It is made of a rigid steel
body that withstands impacts and diverts crash force. Side
airbags are available on LX models, standard on top-line EX
models—which also come with an antilock braking system.
Under the Hood
A typically durable Honda engine leads the way for this year’s
CR-V model lineup. It is a 2.4-liter, dual overhead cam inline
4-cylinder setup, and it has 160 horsepower at 6000 rpm and
162 lb-ft of torque at 3600 rpm.
Entry-level LX models are available with front-wheel drive
or an all-wheel drive configuration, which is the sole option
for top-line EX models. Because the CR-V is not really intended
to take on serious off-road terrain, the AWD configuration
lacks low-range gearing.
5-speed manual transmission is offered, as is a 4-speed automatic
setup. Also in typical Honda fashion is the fuel economy of
the CR-V. Two-wheel drive models with automatic will get and
estimated 23/28 mpg (city/highway).
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Five passengers will find ample space to stretch out inside
the 2004 CR-V. There’s 72 cubic feet of cargo volume to make
use of as well, should you need it. Plus, you can always fit
the goods on top using the CR-V’s roof rails.
When you pick up the entry-level LX model, the package is
modest and convenient. Though it isn’t in the luxury class
of vehicles, you’re still treated to air conditioning, an
interior air filter, cruise control, front bucket seats with
driver-seat height adjustment, power mirrors, windows and
door locks and an AM/FM/cassette/CD player.
For a few more bills the EX trim is available. It adds on
such standard items as alloy wheels, a power sunroof, an AM/FM/cassette
player with in-dash 6-disc CD changer and remote keyless entry.
