Honda Odyssey Review:
Odysseus’s epic journey returning home after the Trojan War
lasted a full ten years. The makers at Honda are pretty confident
that the Odyssey would be capable of such a journey—and then
some.
Wanderings that last a decade would be nothing new for a
Honda model—the Odyssey just packages this tried engineering
in a spacious minivan form. That way, the whole family can
do it together—if they’re not at each other’s throats first.
The 2004 Honda Odyssey doesn’t see many upgrades. Perhaps
this is because the engineers at Honda got a little lazy,
though a better explanation would be that the Odyssey was
already quite modern to begin with. Offered in LX, EX and
leather-upholstered EX-L trims, the Odyssey is set to embark
on its journey.
Under the Hood
All 2004 Honda Odyssey models use a front-wheel drive configuration.
They also share the same capable engine. It is a 3.5-liter
V6 model. The production rate is as follows: 240 horsepower
at 5500 rpm and 242 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm.
Durability is virtually guaranteed: Honda says that the Odyssey
should require no major tune-ups for the first 105,000 miles.
Putting the 240 horsepower to use is a 5-speed automatic transmission.
It features advanced Grade Logic Control, which avoids gear
hunting on uphills and descents. It also downshifts for added
engine braking.
Traction control is standard with each and every Honda Odyssey
model. It helps the minivan avoid slippage during poor weather
situations, or any other compromising scenarios.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Honda Odyssey will sit seven passengers without difficulty.
There’s also a third-row bench that folds flush with the
floor, providing extra room for bigger pieces of cargo that
need to be transported. Also standard are dual sliding side
doors. They are power operated, except on the base LX model.
If you’re going to be heading on a ten-year journey, it would
be nice to do it in style. For this, Honda offers the EX-L
trim. It covers the upholstery in soft, supple leather, adding
heated front seats up front. Also standard with the EX-L trim
are steering-wheel radio controls, air conditioning with automatic
climate control, an AM/FM/CD player and a universal garage-door
opener.
A DVD entertainment system and a navigation system are optional
with the EX-L.
