2004 Hyundai Accent Review:
There are few cars in the North American market that are
less expensive than the Hyundai Accent. It is a price buster:
cheap but durable, a no-frills option to handle your driving
needs.
The smallest car in the Hyundai fleet doesn’t receive a whole
lot of changes for the upcoming model year. As always, Hyundai’s
comprehensive warranty covers the subcompact car from end
to end. It breaks down as follows: 5-years/60,000-mi. bumper-to-bumper
and 10/100,000 powertrain.
The Hyundai Accent got a major facelift for 2003. It included
a new engine hood that sweeps more smoothly into the front
bumper and fascia. In back, Accent was given a fresh look
with new bumpers, quarter panels, deck lid and taillights.
Under the Hood
Though a low-end model in terms of price, the Accent isn’t
a pushover on the road. Its twin-cam, 16-valve, 1.6-liter
inline 4-cylinder engine produces 103 horsepower at 5800 rpm
and 106 lb-ft of torque at just 3000 rpm. That meaty amount
of low-speed torque translates into fast launches into traffic,
where the Accent easily keeps pace.
All totaled up, the 2004 Accent weighs in at 2300 pounds,
which is quite light compared to other models. This gives
it a very nice power-to-weight ratio. Combined with an aerodynamic
design and well-selected gear ratios that make the most of
the engine's torque, the result is one zippy ride.
There’s nothing more annoying than a car that rattles and
hums on the road, something Hyundai engineers certainly agree
with. For the Accent, they prevented this by giving the subcompact
car a stiff body, plenty of sound-deadening insulation and
double door seals.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Both Accent body styles sit five passengers. The base three-door
hatchback Accent is duly named. It offers air conditioning
as an option. However, the base Accent does comes standard
with an AM/FM/cassette stereo, a center console, a vanity
mirror, tilt steering, intermittent wipers and a 60/40 split
folding rear seat.
At the top of the pack is the sporty GT hatchback. With fog
lights and a specially-tuned sport suspension, it adds a measure
of aggression to the lineup. Also part of the GT mix are alloy
wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a rear spoiler.
There are few options for 2004. Mud guards and floormats
are about all that’s available.
